Sharks have been on this planet for over 400 million years, so there is a lot they can teach us about survival and adaptability. For example: how do sharks, which unlike other fish are denser than water, stay afloat? They keep moving. When Jasmin Graham, an award-winning young shark scientist, started to feel that the traditional path to becoming a marine biologist was pulling her under, she remembered this important lesson: keep moving forward.

This book reminded me of Lab Girl by Hope Jahren; blending personal memoir with scientific chapters about sharks and sawfish research. Jasmin's experience as a Black woman in STEM, and her family's generational knowledge of Myrtle Beach and fishing there was extremely interesting. I was already hooked by the shark research.
However, I was surprised that this was a produced and edited audio recording by Penguin Random House. There is no noise or hiccups in the recording but the author is just *reading* off of the page the whole time, and it's unnatural and grating. I sped up the audio and would recommend anyone interested in the title to preview it, and I will certainly buy a paper copy to add to my science memoir collection. With that in mind, if you like sharks or listening about young women in STEM, this is for you!
