Detective Inspector Munro is a burly Scottish policeman who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Detective Sergeant West is an intelligent young woman, new to the force, with a lot to prove. When a missing person case lands on their desks, Munro is skeptical there is much to it. But their investigation soon comes to some strange findings, and before long, a body is found. With a serial killer on their hands they must act fast to trace a woman placed at the scene of the crime. Yet discovering her true identity, let alone finding her, proves difficult. And as the plot thickens they realize the crime is far graver than either of them could have imagined. According to reviews of the print copy, I should be glad that I listened to this one. The narrator was great, and I didn't notice any strange grammar or other such errors.
So, the story. It was lean, spare and very fast. I enjoyed it up until the last ten minutes, where it just kind of... stopped. I prefer an ending that is a little tidier.
The characters were developed just enough to be 3 dimensional. Just. And that was fine by me. I'm happy to jump right into the murder.
The villain, again, was pretty good up until the big "reveal" at the end. She was a bit over the top, but I don't mind that either.
The writing was fairly solid. There was a marked contrast between the parts as told by the villains (which was a touch florid for me) and those written in the third person. I think it worked.
Apparently, the series gets better, so I look forward to seeing for myself if that's so.
