À propos de cet audio
Meaghan Marie Hackinen's follow-up to her award-nominated debut South Away charts her unforgettable, twenty-five-day journey on the Trans Am Bike Race: a coast-to-coast ride across the entire North American continent from Oregon to Virginia. Without the aid of a support crew, Hackinen must rely entirely on her wits, ingenuity, and sheer determination to finish this extremely challenging feat.
A sports story with a unique theme, Hackinen writes about the Trans Am Bike Race as a cultural whole, as she encounters consequences and unforeseen repercussions of an underground, unregulated athletic endeavor. Shifting Gears is another expertly-delivered travelogue and a thrilling glimpse into a world of athletes driven to impossible lengths.

This is a story about personal growth and resilience. Oh and bikes.
Though at the time of this reading Hackinen is a well-decorated ultra-endurance athlete with nothing more to prove, in her re-telling of one of her earlier ultras she is forthright and honest about feeling like an imposter. This vulnerability establishes a bond with any reader who is seeking insight in how to gain the grit and determination needed for any such feat -- cycling or otherwise.
At many points in the book Hackinen brilliantly uses the race as an allegory for life itself; with each stage in the race a metaphor for life's many twists and turns. The takeaway here is that if one can learn to overcome momentous challenges on a small scale, that translation of that ability to overcome in day to day life is pretty natural.
