Phil Wang has been asked this question so many times he's lost count. So, finally, he decided to write a book about it. About how to be from two places at once.

Phil was born in the UK, in Stoke-on-Trent to an English mother and a Chinese-Malaysian father. Three weeks after his birth, the Wang family returned to his father's hometown in Malaysia, and at age 16, Phil was uprooted once again, to return with his family to the UK.

In Sidesplitter, Phil reflects on race, belonging and cultural cachet, bringing his trademark cynicism and wit to topics that range from food and comedy to empire and colonialism.

I like Phil Wang's comedy, but find his rambling autobiography shockingly filled with love and admiration for the British Empire - which was nothing to be proud of. That he is completely unaware of what happened in the "Malayan Emergency" is baffling. These atrocities took place in his home island of Borneo - the 12 year war was labeled an "emergency" for PR and insurance reasons - the British could act unbound by the Geneva Convention, perpetrating their usual tactics of starvation and concentration camps. Tribal headhunters were used to terrorize the population - photographs of British soldiers posing with severed heads made it back to Britain, despite desperate attempts to quash the stories.
For someone supposedly so well educated, Wang's lack of historical context in his account of life and his family history in Malaysia is very unbalanced.
He should have stuck with light hearted anecdotes of his parent's meeting rather than wax lyrical about the British Empire and how wonderful the English language is.
