À propos de cet audio
A New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and IndieBound bestseller
"Brilliant and timely"—Oliver Burkeman
~ Do Fewer Things. Work at a Natural Pace. Obsess over Quality. ~
From the New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and Deep Work, a groundbreaking philosophy for pursuing meaningful accomplishment while avoiding overload
Our current definition of “productivity” is broken. It pushes us to treat busyness as a proxy for useful effort, leading to impossibly lengthy task lists and ceaseless meetings. We’re overwhelmed by all we have to do and on the edge of burnout, left to decide between giving into soul-sapping hustle culture or rejecting ambition altogether. But are these really our only choices?
Long before the arrival of pinging inboxes and clogged schedules, history’s most creative and impactful philosophers, scientists, artists, and writers mastered the art of producing valuable work with staying power. In this timely and provocative book, Cal Newport harnesses the wisdom of these traditional knowledge workers to radically transform our modern jobs. Drawing from deep research on the habits and mindsets of a varied cast of storied thinkers–from Galileo and Isaac Newton, to Jane Austen and Georgia O’Keefe–Newport lays out the key principles of “slow productivity,” a more sustainable alternative to the aimless overwhelm that defines our current moment. Combining cultural criticism with systematic pragmatism, Newport deconstructs the absurdities inherent in standard notions of productivity, and then provides step-by-step advice for cultivating a slower, more humane alternative.
From the aggressive rethinking of workload management, to introducing seasonal variation, to shifting your performance toward long-term quality, Slow Productivity provides a roadmap for escaping overload and arriving instead at a more timeless approach to pursuing meaningful accomplishment. The world of work is due for a new revolution. Slow productivity is exactly what we need.

In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Modern knowledge workers communicate constantly. Their days are defined by a relentless barrage of incoming messages and back-and-forth digital conversations - a state of constant, anxious chatter in which nobody can disconnect, and so nobody has the cognitive bandwidth to perform substantive work. There was a time when tools like email felt cutting edge, but a thorough review of current evidence reveals that the "hyperactive hive mind" workflow they helped create has become a productivity disaster, reducing profitability and perhaps even slowing overall economic growth.

Life revolves around learning—in school, at our jobs, even in the things we do for fun. Yet learning is often mysterious. Sometimes it comes fairly effortlessly: quickly finding our way around a new neighborhood or picking up the routine at a new job. In other cases, it’s a slog. We may spend hours in the library, yet still not do well on an exam. We may want to switch companies, industries, or even professions, but not feel qualified to make the leap.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

There is no bigger public health story now than the collapse in youth mental health. The numbers are terrifying and dominate our headlines. There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. Haidt has spent his career speaking wisdom and truth into the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the perfect storm contributing to a public health emergency for Gen Z.

For the ancients, everything worth pursuing in life flowed from a strong sense of justice—or one’s commitment to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult. In order to be courageous, wise, and self-disciplined, one must begin with justice. The influence of the modern world often tells us that acting justly is optional. Holiday argues that that’s simply untrue—and the fact that so few people today have the strength to stand by their convictions explains much about why we’re so unhappy.

Simple yet impactful
Cal nailed it again. I wish I had this book last year, it would have helped me avoid burn out. These simple strategies could help anyone who finds themselves in an overly fast paced environment struggling with the never ending to-do list while struggling to maintain a healthy work life balance. I would love to share a copy with every one of my former colleagues.
One negative take away though is I found the book to be too heavy in stories of celebrities who implemented the strategies. This book could be condensed down to a Coles Notes version without losing it's impact. I enjoyed the stories but I don't feel it added much to the overall teachings.
Thank you Cal for another life changing book.

Anecdotes strong, would have enjoyed more supporting evidence
The author makes his points with anecdotes. What I would enjoy seeing in addition to these great stories would be more broad-scale evidence. Overall, while I believe in his general ideas, and found some inspiring, I don’t find his reasoning as compelling as I would have liked. For example, the case he tries to make for a consultant working less and having a great income by charging more bases his calculation on a 40-day work week being fully billable. It doesn’t seem realistic to me and there were a couple of other moments where I thought a fuller discussion was missing.

Too Anecdotal
I find it unlikely that this book will help anyone but in the most specific of circumstances. Unless the people you are trying to convince will accept flimsy folk tales about what famous people may or may not have done, this book will not help you (lucky for you, the bar for convincing people seems lower than ever).

Great in theory, unrealistic in practice
I typically like Cal’s writing and approaches, but this book suffers from theoretical recommendations that haven’t really been used in practice.
Very VERY few people will actually be able to implement this. Knowledge work is naturally messy, trying to shoehorn a dynamic knowledge workflow into a rigid structure is near impossible to do.
The entire section on doing less shouldn’t be about actually doing less, it should really be about how to identify the very few really critical things to work on. That skill will be useful in any job, while the tactics recommended in this book will apply to very few jobs.
