Mona Arshi was born in West London, where she still lives. She worked as a human-rights lawyer with the NGO Liberty for a decade before receiving a Master’s in creative writing from the University of East Anglia. Her debut poetry collection Small Hands was published in 2015, winning the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Mona Arshi regularly appears on BBC Radio 4. Her poems have been published in The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Times of India and most recently the London Underground.

A Coming-of-Age Story That Speaks Volumes
I picked this up as I read a gushing review in a British Newspaper. Years later I have finally listened to it.
This is one of the most quietly stunning novels I’ve read this year. Told in short, perfectly calibrated chapters, it follows Ruby, the daughter of Indian immigrants, who stops speaking as a child.
Through prose that’s spare but I found astonishingly evocative, the novel explores Ruby’s inner world, her silent resilience, and the emotional weight of her mother’s depressive breakdowns.
There’s so much power in what’s left unsaid; every word feels carefully chosen, carrying more weight because of what surrounds it. It’s a coming-of-age story that’s both intimate and expansive, full of emotional depth and quiet grace.
I’m still unpacking why it moved me so deeply, but I know it’s a book that will stay with me for a long time.
