Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely anticipated sequel to TJ Klune's The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade.

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life, built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six magical and so-called dangerous children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. And he is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth; Zoe Chapelwhite, the island’s sprite; and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

Most Anticipated from Goodreads, Paste, Polygon, BookBub, and more.

worth the wait (and the credit)

I had been eagerly waiting for this instalment of the Cerulean Chronicles and it was well worth the wait. I laughed and cried throughout and truly love all of the inhabitants of Marsyas Island. The little bits of pop culture references and other one liners throughout were awesome. I love how the narrator expressed just the right emotions for the situation and his representation of all the various characters was amazing. I will definitely give this one a second (and maybe third) listen.

Such a delightful experience, with loveable characters and a ‘love wins’ perspective. Simple, joy based magic!

Amazing Sequel

I cried. I laughed. I smiled like a dang fool. While there were some scenes that made me roll my eyes, and a few things that were simply “agenda” based and didn’t add to the story, I still thoroughly enjoyed! The house in the cerulean sea was one of my favourite books ever, I was nervous this sequel wouldn’t stand up to its counterpart. But it did not disappoint. It was simply amazing! I will add, the ending, while cheesy and predictable and maybe even slightly lame, still made me tear up. It seemed, rushed in a way? The narrator definitely got a bit carried away a few times… but overall one of my favourite narrators. The weird whiny scream thing he did out for some of the “passion” conveying scenes was hard to get through I won’t lie. I should have stopped at the epilogue… the acknowledgements didn’t do it for me. When spreading a message about love and whole-ness it’s important to not do the same very thing you’re trying to call out as bad. I thought this book was a safe space but the acknowledgements made second guess that.

Great Story - could have done without the earful of hate at the end.

Great story although the first book was more enjoyable. This sequel seemed a little more ‘platform-y’ which was seemingly confirmed by the strong words included at the end. The characters are imaginative as with the first. The narration got a bit over the top for my liking when it should have been neutrally toned infill. IMO it should have been the delightfully whimsical, funny, welcoming-to-all story it was but the acknowledgments ruined the idea of love for everyone even when there are disagreements. TJ Klune needs a lesson from Arthur Parnasis.

Great story! Loved the authors note at the end (which is not hate like another reviewer suggested)

I really liked this book. Just a unique concept. Definitely anti-christ, anti JK Rowel vibes like intended ! a happy story !

Solid sequel

Love the story and characters. Wish there was more story with the kids. But the performance from the narrator is way over the top very frequently.

Heavy handed messaging and not nearly as good as the first book

I love the first book and the character of Linus Baker. This time round, I found the story dull, the children overly precocious, and the messaging so heavy handed. The narration was dramatic and had me rolling my eyes at times.
I was so excited for this sequel, and found it disappointing. For an author who strives to be JK Rowling's antithesis (a goal I'm all for), whole sections of this story felt lifted from The Order of the Phoenix.
There was an opportunity to continue Arthur and Linus' story and drive home some important messages, but this was just not good. I can't imagine this being published if the first book didn't exist.
