She meets Miriam, who as a 16-year-old was accused of trying to start World War III. She visits the regime’s cartographer, a man obsessed to this day with the Berlin Wall, then gets drunk with the legendary “Mik Jegger” of the east, once declared by the authorities “no longer to exist.” And she finds spies and Stasi men, in hiding but defiant, still loyal to the regime as they lick their wounds and regroup, hoping for the next revolution.

Stasiland is a brilliant, timeless portrait of a Kafkaesque world, as gripping as any thriller. In a world of total surveillance, its celebration of human conscience and courage is as potent as ever.

I liked this one a lot; very compelling stories and well narrated. my only complaint is a couple of editing errors where repeat lines were overlooked, but only happend twice at most. (one might have been an interview subject double taking.)

Fantastic book. So easy to forget the socialism of East Germany and the horrors it inflicted on its own people. As if they disappeared like a fog. This is a well written and important book.

Though the book’s contents are very interesting, I was shocked to hear it read by someone who clearly doesn’t speak German. I also thought the reader impersonated many of the characters as if she’d been reading from a play and not a very serious real-life story. Many of the characters sounded like caricatures. Personally I think the book should be recorded again with a different voice and approach that is more respectful of German culture and society.
