2022 NYPL Best Books of the Year, Long-listed

A murder she doesn’t remember committing. A killer she doesn’t remember meeting. Megan Goldin’s Stay Awake is an electrifying novel that proves memory can be deadly.

Liv Reese wakes up in the back of a taxi with no idea where she is or how she got there. When she’s dropped off at the door of her brownstone, a stranger answers—a stranger who claims to live in her apartment. She reaches for her phone to call for help, only to discover it’s missing. In its place is a bloodstained knife. Her hands are covered in scribbled messages, like graffiti on her skin: STAY AWAKE.

Two years ago, Liv was thriving as a successful writer for a trendy magazine. Now, she’s lost and disoriented in a New York City that looks nothing like what she remembers. Catching a glimpse of the local news, she’s horrified to see reports of a crime scene where the victim’s blood has been used to scrawl a message across a window, similar to the message that’s inked on her hands. What did she do last night? And why does she remember nothing from the past two years? Liv finds herself on the run for a crime she doesn’t remember committing. But there’s someone who does know exactly what she did, and they’ll do anything to make her forget—permanently.

A complex thriller that unfolds at a breakneck speed, Stay Awake will keep you up all night.

Superbe narration

I’ve read some comments about people who didn’t enjoy the narration, but I enjoyed it very much. The narrator did a very good job at adapting her speed and intonation between the past and present main character. I think it was great listening to this story!

Bit of a Memento rip-off, but okay.

A little glaring it doesn't at least tip its hat to Memento. I mean it rips of HUGE parts of that film. At least make some reference to the fact that you're using its ideas. Aside from that, it's a decent read, but nothing stunning. The part where it really fails is the police procedural elements. It's beyond me how in this day and age--when readers have such a plethora of true crime content--that authors can think readers won't notice major holes in the procedural elements. The dialogue between the cops is also frequently cringey, because it's so unnaturally overly explanatory.

Be warned, if you're listening to the audiobook version, the narrator for the protagonist is TERRIBLE. I had to speed up the audio because she's so slow. But the worst parts are she can't pronounce basic words ("misogynist" is pronounced with a hard "g," "Houston" is pronounced "hooston"), the Italian is made to sound like Dracula, and most of the other characters are narrated like cartoon characters.

Too predictable

Sorry but narration was not good and story was so so. I knew what was what long before the ending.

Imogen Church was teeeeerible

Liv’s narrator was soooo painfully bad. She talked so slow that I actually had it on 1.5 speed nearly the whole book and in some parts I was at 2.3 speed I am not kidding you!!! I also was just dying to get through this book because it was so so bad. Judging by the good reviews on Goodreads, honestly what is going on with people???? How can this book have such a high rating??? I’m really concerned that so many people are this (I don’t want to say anything mean here) ??? But how can anyone think this was great?? How can anyone think this was above a 2???? This was so annoyingly stupid, repetitive, idiotic you name it as well as sooooo frustrating. Every two seconds Liv would look at her wrist and say, “It says stay awake on my wrist. I’m so confused.” It dragged on and on and on and on and on much like this sentence. And whenever she would be about to get answers, she would run out of there like a bat out of hell. It made zero sense. She was constantly running and yet wondering what’s going on? Nothing ever happened and honestly it was 300 pages too long to find out who the actual murderer was. I picked this book up at the airport because I was intrigued by the cover. I know that is a poor reason to pick up a book but I was in a big rush. Then I find out that the book is really about someone with a medical condition. This was not a mystery, nor a thriller, nor suspenseful, this was an absolute bore and torturous to finish. I only did so because I never give up on books. And big spoiler here: I’m really getting tired of hearing that the murderer or the bad guy in the book is actually a brilliant surgeon or dedicated doctor irl. Like come on. That is so stupid.
