Fascinating
Very interesting exploration of the occasionally dark underpinnings of Victorian life. Fry’s interest and joy in discussing these topics is evident and drags the listener into these back alleys and opium dens with him. Would recommend to any lovers of history and those who appreciate a good scandal.

Good but….
Having spent much of my life in the pursuit of all things Japanese, I wanted this book dearly. Information is good, accurate, although from a very male point of view. Wish the author could have understood more deeply about Kaiseki. We westerners just don;t have that sensitive palate. But please please tell me why someone is reading this book with no idea how to pronounce Japanese. It becomes almost unbearable to hear ordinary things and places badly mispronounced. This should have been checked and rechecked by a Japanese speaker. It took away from my enjoyment, bringing it down to a 3 star. No excuse for this!

Don’t listen at bedtime

Brilliantly Stephen!
This is Stephen Frey in all his narrative glory. His playful telling of these scintillating stories makes for a very entertaining listen and the facts given to illustrate the truth behind the stories are wonderfully educational! A must-listen to be sure!
