Esselmont's Best?
This story of the Malazan empire is great. Esselmont likes to write several stories at once and weave them together. He is sometimes guilty of writing too much. This story is more streamlined and the story threads make a lot of sense. Excellent. 9/10 stars.

War and Seas
The great thing about the Malazan stories, both those written by Ian Esslemont and those by Steven Erikson, is how even-handed they are.
There are viewpoint characters from all sides of the tale, and even halfway through, I cannot tell who the "good guys" are.
That's the other thing. In the big picture, there are no good guys or bad guys, though there are certainly individual heroes and villains.
Because the Novels of the Malazan Empire are concurrent with the Tales from the Malazan Book of the Fallen, the stories, including this one, frequently occur before books I have already read from the other series. Surprisingly, very few spoilers occur.

Third best
The prior two books were more enjoyable. I couldn't get into the characters. The performance was great, however.
