My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk. I'm a wizard. I work out of an office in midtown Chicago. With rent past due and a decent meal becoming an issue of some importance, Harry needs work, and soon. A call from a distraught wife, and another from Lt. Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigation Unit makes Harry believe things are looking up, but they are about to get worse, much worse. Someone is harnessing immense supernatural forces to commit a series of grisly murders. Someone has violated the first law of magic: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Tracking that someone takes Harry into the dangerous underbelly of Chicago, from mobsters to vampires, while he himself is under suspicion of the crimes.

The first book in my favorite series.
I've read all the dmDresden Files books before listening to this, and the narration and acting a gravitas that just reading it didn't. totally recommend you listen to this series at least once!

Love James narrating it, book sort of boring
I love listening to James reading it. the book itself was hard to find interesting. some funny moments that I chuckled at. his conversations with Bob were quite amusing. Seemed to drag on without getting to the actual storyline details.
I will be listening to the further ones only because of James.

Enjoyed the book very much.
James Marsters did a splendid performance as narrator. This is my first Dresden Files exposure and one of my first Audible book. I had a great time. I think I'll read more Dresden Files and continue past my free trial of Audible.

I have to admit…
I’d listen to anything read by Spike. Good thing there are a lot more in the Dresden series. Marsters has exactly the right hint of weary resignation and fatalism to encapsulate Butcher’s principled anti-hero. Great stuff!

The start of a fantastic series!
Sit back and strap yourself in. The Dresden Files is a fantastic series that starts with Storm Front and builds as it goes. Each book is a delight, and the narrator *is* the voice of Dresden.
Storm Front is great, but you will see if you go on that the books take a turn for the better around book four. Once you've seen where they go, the earlier titles feel formulaic, but thoroughly enjoyable.

intro to world of urban fantasy
This sparked getting me back into reading after a long period without.
The main character is a great wisecracking know it all who doesn't really know it all...The offbeat humor and witty sarcastic remarks were enjoyable. The book pulls off showing both that aspect of Harry Dresden as well as his underlying sincerity and vulnerability. He is a good underdog type character just doing his best to get by and help others.
Epic magic in an urban setting was something I'd never considered prior to this book. It's worth giving a shot, especially if you like that kind of thing to begin with.
There is some humour attempted around the main character's "chivalrous" attitude towards women that doesn't really land. My understanding having read about the series is that the author is trying to draw on old-school noir type detective stories such as the Raymond Chandler novels and how male heroes attitudes towards women are in those types of books. It's kind of tiresome and maybe a weakness in the novel. My take is it's not a deal breaker as far as enjoying the rest of the book. I think the author gets much better in this area as the series goes on and the protagonist develops, although it never fully goes away. If that type of thing is a red flag though you'll probably notice it in this book.
