Join a courageous group of teens as they make their way in a post-apocalyptic adventure story of survival after an EMP has virtually shut down modern technology across North America.

Setting out on foot with nothing more than some soon-to-be worthless cash and a little advice from a trusted teacher, Alex, Quinn, Josh, Cooper, and Dara walk through a burning city that has come to a halt. The devastation they see as they make their way out of the city is a small part of the horror that the nation will become. As the days go by with no food deliveries and no water flowing from taps, civilization will start to crumble and it will be survival of the fittest. With 1500 miles to cross, they will need to plan well, count on each other, and pray for a little luck. Even with that, chances are slim of getting home when you are stranded.

Gotta say I loved that these kids were Canadian 17 year olds from Alberta won a trip to Disneyland in LA but on the first morning they got there EMP’s went off and all technology stopped working. A smart old teacher who said she was a doomsday Prepper quickly told the kids what they should do, but they couldn’t agree on where to go so they split up.

Alex seems like the female protagonist she split off with 1 female friend & 3 male friends. Right away they used their money to buy bikes and supplies to get as far away from a big city as they could. They worked well together and met some nice people on the way and tried to help others when they could.

They ended up getting an RV from an old man after they helped him burry his wife. But shortly afterwards they were stopped and kidnapped by some bad guys. They broke out and killed the bad guys & rescued a bunch of children that were being abused and held captive.

They kept moving they were shot at a few times, one guy was shot twice in the leg so Alex had to get them out at a vet clinic they found. Then they got through to Canada 🇨🇦 it was funny when people had heard stories about them killing the biker gang. They were almost home when they were told their town was taken over by a biker gang. Now they prepare to take it back!

Got it on the strength of being a Canadian listen. The target audience appears to be 15-16 year old girls and the writing reflects that. Lots of well-worn tropes and outright cliches. The conflict is a trifle too facile and the challenges too easily overcome The saving grace is that it is in fact a comfortable listen. So for a background listen it serves its purpose, particularly as a Plus offering.

The story itself is good. I am Canadian, so I was extra interested in trying it. There are some really cringe-worthy errors though. When they talked about the death penalty (which Canada has not had for a very very very long time) I thought it was awkward. If you don't know some actual facts, it's pretty good as a straight-forward survivalist story. I was just surprised to learn the author herself is Canadian. With some of the writing, I feel like I was expecting Texas or Florida.
