Fun story.

This was a fun story! I needed some escapism, and frankly, the only reason why I listened to the first book is because it was free, as I have never heard of it before.
That being said, I don’t generally read fantasy, but I enjoyed the sci-fi element of this.
Gwen, the main character is super likable. The story was engaging, and the themes of problem-solving and endurance were motivating.

The fact that the author tried to write a multi ethnic cast is appreciated, she just wrote them… Terribly. Any Latin character seemed to be a villain, black characters were written like a SNL parody of a black character. and it’s just all super awkward. I don’t think the author had any intention of being racial, but it was uncomfortable.

Aside from that it was kind of nice reading something so fluffy. I’ve never really read much romance or fantasy, and I think these books fit into that category, and I liked it! Also, an Armenian character, crazy!

Regarding the performance. The voice actor did not have an annoying voice at all, which I totally appreciate, at times it was even soothing, which is perfect. Occasionally, you could tell that there was some bad editing, but not a huge deal. Again, some of the accents were a little bit awkward, but I don’t think that that was the narrator’s fault I think it’s just how it was written, and how she was directed.

A missed opportunity for a good ending

I tried to finish this book at least 3 times before I forwarded about 50 chapters to the last two to know the end. Sadly, I didn't feel like I missed anything by skipping almost half of the book. To me, the writer went from a narrative that was tight-packed with action and significant details that always kept the story moving forward, to long, useless descriptions of the scenery, feelings, situations or interactions that never added very much to the series. Maybe the change is a bit radical and that's what's turning me off? Someone compared it to Stephen King's style, but I wouldn't go that far. His stories are very much character-driven and his verbal diahrrea is mostly so that we get enough information about each character's background and motivations so the resulting situations make sense within his world. I think Survive fails to focus on the relevant information that would make each character come alive, or to make certain situations believable or logical, so to me this book as the end of the series is very anti-climatic.
