Description
Revised by the author, Casey Hammer, with additional content. The original Surviving My Birthright has received a facelift and includes a foreword by Heather McDonald, actress, comedian, and host of Juicy Scoop. Reviews are by Edward Jay Epstein, author of Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer, and Lauren Skae, @thezenblonde. Entrepreneur Romi Cortier adds his take on From the Inside Looking Out, a recap of Casey’s life. And lastly, Casey Hammer adds what’s to come and coming soon, featuring her new book Hammertime: Surviving & Thriving, along with poetry throughout.
The name Armand Hammer conjures up many aspirational ideals. Billionaire. Industrialist. Successful businessman. Philanthropist. Art collector. It sounds like the idealized American success story. However, the reality of growing up Hammer had a very dark side, with very real consequences.
Violence. Addiction. Abuse. These are just some of the realities that Casey Hammer, the only granddaughter of Armand Hammer, had to overcome. As dark as her recollections are, Casey is the embodiment of courage and strength. She weathered the storm and came out stronger on the other side. Hers is a story of survival, hope, and inspiration. Lift the veil and see the realities of growing up Hammer.

Same yourself some time you'll never get back...
I can't tell if it's just so badly written or if the narrator is that bad, but I couldn't listen too it. I found I had to keep re-listening to the same thing over and over...it wouldn't sink in. It just rambled incoherently.

Useful in Unexpected Ways
If you want to study and understand BPD, people pleasers, and the effects of sexual abuse, this is the book for you.
It is clear Casey's feet were not grounded in reality, and her fantasies created her and are a huge part of her.
I could only take so much of this and had to take many breaks. Not a binge kinda book.
Be prepared to hear a grown adult talk about la la Land over and over and over again.
People who suffer from BPD do in fact suffer, and Casey Hammer has never known peace. It is clear by the poetry she writes that there was some serious editing or co-writing in the book. Her poems are childlike and basic, rhyming mad, sad, and glad, I am surprised the publisher did not take it out.
People who are sexually abused are often emotionally stunted at that age. You can often guess when it happened to them by how they behave. It makes perfect sense that Casey Hammer thinks and reacts to situations like a daydreaming child. Her favorite memories aren't memories at all, they are fantasies. Her strength comes from her imagination, and it's an excellent study if you want to learn more about BPD and the effects of childhood sexual abuse. She tries to convince herself that she doesn't care what people think, but she is a people pleaser, desperate for approval and understanding.
There are several inconsistencies in her story, but keep in mind you are reading the autobiography of someone who is mentally ill and has survived by escaping to a Land of make believe.
I started this book as a quest for information, a fact-finding mission, but it turned into a window into the world of BPD, people pleasing, and childhood trauma.
