When TJ Powar—a pretty, popular debater—and her cousin Simran become the subject of a meme: with TJ being the “expectation” of dating an Indian girl and her Sikh cousin who does not remove her body hair being the “reality”—TJ decides to take a stand.

A great addition to Canadian YA literature
Pretty, popular high school debater Tejinder "TJ" Powar and her cousin Simran become the target of a viral meme that brutally compares the Indo-Canadian girls and their body hair. To prove the point that waxing and threading do not make someone more beautiful, TJ stops her regular hair-removal regime, much to the consternation of her boyfriend, friends, and mother. What begins as a simple 'debate' on the significance of body hair evolves to greater conversations about online bullying, racism, societal standards of beauty and gender, misogyny, and even transphobia. First-time novelist Jesmeen Kaur Deo's prose is smooth and enjoyable; I'm fairly certain I could have listened to this audiobook in one sitting. The characters in move beyond the high school stereotypes, and many of the flawed characters have complicated relationships with other equally-flawed characters. I loved that the novel (unlike a lot of other YA written by Canadian authors) is unapologetically Canadian. Finally, I will argue that Charlie Rosencrantz is one of the greatest teen love interests of all time, while simultaneously proposing that Isaac and Jenna Turner are two of YA's most delicious villains. Jesmeen Kaur Deo is a fantastic new voice in YA literature, and I look forward to her future works; Mayuri Bhandari did a fantastic job as narrator.
