À propos de cet audio
The sweeping epic novel of the founding of Hong Kong, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell
“There can only be one Tai-Pan.”
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming. War between England and China might be over, but the hostilities remain. Struan and Brock come to control much of England’s trade with China yet neither can control their desires or their hatred of each other. Over the years, their two families will cross paths, threatening to rip both apart, with reverberations that will echo across the generations.
Struan must fight to save his company and his family, or risk seeing everything he has created destroyed at the hands of his sworn enemy. Ambition, political intrigue, and love and lust weave their way throughout the novel the New York Times called, “grand entertainment…packed with action…with blood and sin, treachery and conspiracy, sex and murder.” East and West come together in an opulent and intricately plotted narrative. A tour-de-force of historical fiction, rich in detail yet eminently readable, Tai-Pan will stay with you long after the final moment.

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

They are the fatemarked. Misunderstood. Worshipped. Hated. Murdered at birth. Their time to step into the light has come. An ancient prophecy foretold their coming, the chosen few who will bring peace to a land embroiled in a century of mistrust and war. When kings start dying, that hope and belief swiftly turns to fear. Roan Loren is one of the fatemarked, but has hidden his mark of power his entire life, fearing the damage it might cause to those around him. A great evil is coming. He can't hide anymore.

Histoire
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Top notch story and delivery by Gildart Jackson. While Shogun was also excellent Taipan takes the biscuit. Wonderful stuff.

Very talented reader! Gifted. Amazing story.
It took me a few chapters to get into the story, but then I was hooked; action-packed. The performance was phenomenal. Different voices and accents for the characters but also really good voice acting. Well done, Gildart Jackson.

Terrific
This is the very best narration and story I have ever listened to. Gildart Jackson is fantastic. The multi layered characters and the narrator’s ability to switch dialects was astounding.
I highly recommend this book and will listen to it again, I am sure. Now I am starting Book 3 of this series with John Lee narrating. He is always good.

Worthy followup to Shogun
Very well written novel, the start of the fantastic Noble House series. The narrator isn't as great as Ralph Lister, who does many other Asian Saga books, but not bad.

Standout volume in all Historical Fiction
Riveting story start to finish. Narration was flawless, editing was flawless. Griping cross cultural drama that brings history to life in a way that makes you want to relive the story in person. The ending was dramatic and tied the story together in a delicate and satisfying way. 10/10 will probably listen again.

Best of the Best!
I started listening ('re-reading') to Shogun and spent hours enjoying every word. I've read all of James Clavell's books years ago. And listening to them today is a completely different experience. Listening to Tai-Pan was a delight. Gildart Jackson as narrator is the perfect choice. I loved this as much as Shogun. Clavell's writing is so compelling and beautiful and is perfectly suited to an audio book. I loved it so much that I am not sure that any movies can do these stories justice and have avoided watching them. And I'll have great difficulty finding my next book.
