Life changing
I decided to try this book because of my free trial on audible. I sounded exactly like the person the description of who it was directed towards, and the type of concerns I had. I had tried counselling in the past which was totally ineffective for me and actually might have made things worse. I felt very judged. I did not want to go to AA as I am not religious, and the just thought of a group setting made me feel anxious.
So feeling desperate after embarrassing myself one last time, and having my 2 year old son ask why daddy couldn't get out of bed one last time, I decided to make a change. I had a lengthy conversation with my wife about what I was going to do about it, and we decided that listening to an audio book on the way to work and back home might be the solution since I had the time commuting anyway. Also, my way home is a barrage of challenges to get through, between the arm twisting of co-workers and the never ending amount of pubs I need to pass along the way.
By the 3rd day of listening in the car, I had seriously begun thinking about every drink I was having. By the 4th day, out with friends, I decided that this was it, one last hurrah. Of course I woke up the next morning with all the guilt and shame I had been accustomed to. On the 5th day, and every day since, I have not had a drink nor a desire to, and I directly credit this book.
The book was well narrated, and Craig sounded to me or at least convinced me that he legitimately wanted to help people, and sounded genuine. There were plenty of useful metaphors, quotes, anecdotes, concepts, personal stories. And just good info.
This book has totally changed my perspective on alcohol and how it affects my life. I still am worried about caving to pressure from friends, and I have cravings, sure, but I have some tools in my arsenal now to be able to deal with them, like the evil clown metaphor. I'm not sure I will ever have another drink ever again.
If you would have told me this 2 weeks ago I would have said it was impossible. He suggests starting with Alcohol Lied To Me, also by Craig Beck, which I will listen to next. Honestly I didn't expect much of this book. I expected it to be patronizing, cliche, and preachy. Everything that I had heard before, that not only hadn't worked, but had failed miserably. It wasn't. It was exactly what I needed to hear. At times he allowed you to be easy on yourself, and at times uncompromising. Do yourself a favour and give it a listen, it might be one of the best decisions of your life like it has been for me. Craig, if you're reading this, I give you my eternal thanks for sharing your wisdom and changing my life.

This book completely changed my mindset on alcohol. I have been dependent on alcohol for a long time and couldn’t imagine a life without it. Looking forward to making some serious changes regarding my relationship with alcohol moving forward.
