À propos de cet audio

In this definitive history of the modern Arab world, award-winning historian Eugene Rogan draws extensively on Arab sources and texts to place the Arab experience in its crucial historical context for the first time. Tracing five centuries of Arab history, Rogan reveals that there was an age when the Arabs set the rules for the rest of the world. Today, however, the Arab world's sense of subjection to external powers carries vast consequences for both the region and Westerners who attempt to control it.

Updated with a new epilogue, The Arabs is an invaluable, groundbreaking work of history.

Lovely written and read with a very wide scope, and hilariously biased with a complete lack of self awareness regarding said bias.

Very interesting

I was expected this book to be long dense and boring, but really it was captivating. It also explains why Palestine is involved in everything today.

Super informative, interesting, and enjoyable

The history begins with the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluk dynasty in the 16th century, skipping over any history of the peoples of the region before then, other than in occasional and partial backstory references. Given that the title is "The Arabs", one would think that some discussion of Arab conquest in the 7th century of the region would be explored, along with subsequent Arab dynasties, but that is not the case. Ottoman history from conquest until collapse of that empire is pretty good, as this appears to be the author's academic specialty. 20th century history is narrated with an anti-western view. It is very biased when it comes to Palestine and Israel, favouring the Palestinian cause at all episodes without exception, skipping over any discussion of the persecution and exodus of the 900,000 or so Jews from Arab countries following 1948. Ethnic and religious minorities of the region such as Christians, Kurds, Druze, Ishmaili, Bahai, are generally not discussed, except when necessary in explaining factions of the Lebanese civil war. The monarchies established after the fall of the Ottoman empire get generally rough treatment. On the other hand, with some nuance, the military coups and subsequent regimes of Nasser, Sadat, Gaddafi, and even Hafez al-Assad and Saddam Hussein get passes, praise or more generous histories than many others would give.

The voice performance of Derek Perkins is good as usual for that narrator.

Partial history + biased. Good performance
