À propos de cet audio
A Sydney Taylor Notable Book
Inspired by a real-life incident, this riveting novel explores discrimination and antisemitism and reveals their dangerous impact.
Would you defend the indefensible?
That's what seniors Logan March and Cade Crawford are asked to do when a favorite teacher instructs a group of students to argue for the Final Solution - the Nazi plan for the genocide of the Jewish people. Logan and Cade decide they must take a stand, and soon their actions draw the attention of the student body, the administration, and the community at large. But not everyone feels as Logan and Cade do - after all, isn't a school debate just a school debate? It's not long before the situation explodes, and acrimony and anger result.
Based on true events, The Assignment asks: What does it take for tolerance, justice, and love to prevail?
"An important look at a critical moment in history through a modern lens showcasing the power of student activism." (SLJ)

Absolute garbage!
i can very confidently say that this book is not good. The text alone is a scattered hodgepodge of pointless wingeing and missed potential, but the audio somehow makes it worse. Despite having ten different narrators, each with their own vocal quirks and idiosyncracies, the book reads like a funeral where anything fun has been banished to the nether realms. One character, who's supposed to be a teenage boy, sounds like a serial killer that's moments away from commiting another murder, when in actuality, he's talking about his girlfriend being reclusive. The female protagonist was given the most grating voice that actively refuses to emote; making any chapter with her in it a painful slog; while the male protagonist speaks so slow and muted that it leaves chasms of dead air in moments that should be fast.
i want you to imagine going to an elementary school play, where all the acting is stilted, slow, and inturrupted because an actor wet themselves. Now, I want you to imagine the school charging you forty-six Canadian dollars for the privilege of viewing such a mess. like in the metaphor, I don't completely blame the actors for their performance because, for all I know, it could be a paycheck for them; however, I do blame the production's director. To produce something as miserable as this and ask that kind of cash for it is nothing more than hubris, and for that, they can burn!
Don't buy this book on audio. If the story peaks your interest, then please just read it.

If you're human, you should read this book.
I've just finished listening to the audio version of this book and I'm struggling to find the right words to describe my feelings. Let's see if I can sort out a few words for the book: important, impactful, timely, difficult, courageous, necessary.
At times funny and endearing, but with powerful messages about doing the right thing, even if it goes against authority or what might be popular, this book is a must read. Students (and let's face it, adults) must be encouraged to think critically about what happens around them, even if--as we see these days--authority figures say and do things that seem immoral. There is a lot of nuance in this book; sometimes good people make errors in judgement, but that doesn't mean they must be followed just because we trusted them in the past to have a good moral compass.
What I especially loved about this book was that it wasn't just about students speaking out against antisemitism (although they did). It was about students speaking out against ALL hate, using the antisemitic assignment as an example of the extreme of intolerance of 'The Jewish Question' and the 'Final Solution' (okay, so that last line was something I never thought I'd type in my lifetime). But more than that, other forms of discrimination are specifically mentioned, inside the context of Holocaust atrocities and outside of it, making this book even more relatable and current. It's very clearly a book for ALL humans, showing that hate, in all its forms, is not to be tolerated or encouraged, even if the intended end-result is a positive one.
There are a few difficult scenes where the reader is told in first-hand accounts of some of the atrocities suffered at the hands of the nazis but they are necessary. Hard to hear, but necessary. I can only imagine how hard these were to research and write. Hugs and thanks to the author for enduring for the sake of this important story.
Not to be missed are the authors note and acknowledgements that give added depth and context to the fictionalized account that was inspired by true events.
