Description
Nate wants more to life than moving from town to town, hustling chess with his con-man grandfather or wagering pick-up games online. A new immersive game opens up the chance to bring in a steady paycheck. Maybe enough to convince his grandfather to stay straight. Little does he know how his actions will change his life.
A GameLit coming of age story.

pretty average
pretty average lit rpg. I have a few issues with it.
for a book that was all about crafting I was definitely expecting a deeper crafting system.
main character was made a choice that made him instantly unlikable.
As a chess player I was hoping for more chess content.
an opening, a match played out, a position, a gambit, anything chess related really. some girl player dies but she shouts "Queen Sacrifice" and does something while dieing to save the day.
right off the bat it says he hustle people in the park at chess and cheats some times by slipping in an extra pawn. he's also some grandmaster level player as he beat the game chess computer at level 10 which would be around a 2500 rank.
so why cheat if your one of the best?
and they doesn't work. anyone, and I mean anyone would see if an extra pawn was added.
it also says he almost lost to the level 6 or 7 game chess player which would be around 1800 rank.
if someone can beat a 2500 rank chess computer they will never almost loose to an 1800 rank.
Also beating level 10 chess computer, no draw, against a computer that makes near perfect play. most high level games end in a draw.
I could go on about the chess issues but anyways. it's clear they wanted chess in the book but just didn't really understand chess.
no death consequences, that's kinda lame.
I will say the out of game story line was pretty good.
I always give 5 stars.

I Really did enjoy the book, I have some thoughts
The Good:
-The MC was so interesting to read about. How his unique situation tied into the ending was great. Really unique direction to take the story
-The world felt realish. Lots of things happening around the MC without his direct involvement. Like the fighters in high level zones , the groups having to do with A.I. rights and stuff were around but the MC stayed true to his goals and character.
-Story moved at a good pace, I didnt find myself ever really getting bored. Maybe there was one or 2 side stories that felt added and not necessary but i don't regret getting context to those characters situations, especially if they have major parts in book 2
-Narration was pretty good and consistent other than the narrator getting tripped up between words a few times
The Bad (mostly personal opinion here so it wont effect my rating)
-I don't believe a team could simultaneously build a game like this and at the same time not expect the things tge MC did. The MC is constantly doing stuff that is allowed in the game but in a skillful manner, and the dev team is constantly assuming he is cheating in some way rather than beating their game. Now this would make sense that they feel this way, if only there wasn't player logs, the ability to talk to npc's in a controlled environment to investigate, and the fact that there are actually lots of skilled gamers in the world who play for money or speed runs and would totally be able to do the same thing. It just feels unrealistic in the degree in which they honed in on him, and that one guy was fixated on him being a cheater to the point where he tried to turn the community against the MC.
-The book could use an epilogue so people could read it as a standalone. Like the first chapter of the second book. Good news though, there is a second book!
-The woman he meets halfway who grifts him and then says sorry later seemed really inserted and im not sure why.
The Ugly ( I really hope im remembering this right lol I would hate to review this and have been thinking of the wrong book)
-The sound of eating while talking in narration makes me want to break whatever im holding, and throw my headphones into the wall and delete the book never to read that author again. Now you may be thinking "Joel, this sounds like a "you" problem"
and ya your probably right. I have a problem ...with eating/talking or like people going "mffgghh this is SO good!" and its always bacon and eggs or something basic. Its my biggest peeve hearing narrators mimic lip smacking and slurping in a book. Even thinking about it while making this review is making me see red and shake with impotent rage lmao
Good book, will most likely read the second one at some point.

A good litrpg from a new author.
I'm glad I purchased this book. Can't wait for the next one. It wasn't overloaded with fighting and stats like some of the other books.
