 In 1865 Boston, the members of the Dante Club -- poets and Harvard professors Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes, and James Russell Lowell, along with publisher J.T. Fields -- are finishing America's first translation of The Divine Comedy and preparing to unveil Dante's remarkable visions to the New World. The powerful Boston Brahmins at Harvard College are fighting to keep Dante in obscurity, believing that the infiltration of foreign superstitions onto American bookshelves will prove as corrupting as the immigrants living in Boston Harbor.

Oh boy, this does not translate well to audio. At all. It's not the narrator's fault- he did a fine job. It's the material. A bunch of starry-eyed gas bag academics rambling on and unintentionally inspiring a serial killer, then sort of helping to capture him. When you read a paper copy, you can rush through parts that drag and skip over entirely the self-indulgent monologues of the monied intelligencia. Not so when you listen.
What an epic slog. Fanboys: The Historical Fiction!
The mystery had a satisfying solution, though, and it was well thought-out (as well as being a very heavy-handed but still valuable commentary on certain social issues that remain relevant to this day).
Would I listen to this again? Heck no. But it's not a /bad/ book
