À propos de cet audio
In 1951 John Wyndham published his novel The Day of the Triffids to moderate acclaim. Fifty-two years later, this horrifying story is a science-fiction classic, touted by The Times (London) as having 'all the reality of a vividly realised nightmare'.
Bill Masen, bandages over his wounded eyes, misses the most spectacular meteorite shower England has ever seen. Removing his bandages the next morning, he finds masses of sightless people wandering the city. He soon meets Josella, another lucky person who has retained her sight, and together they leave the city, aware that the safe, familiar world they knew a mere 24 hours before is gone forever.
But to survive in this post-apocalyptic world, one must survive the Triffids, strange plants that years before began appearing all over the world. The Triffids can grow to over seven feet tall, pull their roots from the ground to walk and kill a man with one quick lash of their poisonous stingers. With society in shambles, they are now poised to prey on humankind. Wyndham chillingly anticipates bio-warfare and mass destruction, 50 years before their realisation, in this prescient account of Cold War paranoia.
About the author: John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Benyon Harris was born in 1903, the son of a barrister. He tried a number of careers including farming, law, commercial art and advertising, and started writing short stories, intended for sale, in 1925. From 1930 to 1939 he wrote stories of various kinds under different names, almost exclusively for American publications, while also writing detective novels. During the war he was in the Civil Service and then the Army. In 1946 he went back to writing stories for publication in the USA and decided to try a modified form of science fiction, a form he called 'logical fantasy'.

Perfect to listen to...
I have read and enjoyed this book (physical book) a number of times in the past, but was interested to try the audiobook.
Well, it was just excellent. The author is John Wyndham, which partially explains it (I also love his novel, The Chrysalids). The story was vivid and believable, and did not feel dated in the least. The narrator was the other aspect and he was perfect for the job; his tone was clear and pragmatic which matched the story. Great performance and very easy to listen to.

Engaging thriller with a heart
Fantastic story- the unacknowledged grandfather of stories like The Last of Us and the Walking Dead. Focuses on human experience and relationships rather than spectacle, which kept me engaged. Wonderfully written and well performed. Narrator is good at accents and tones that brings the different characters to life. Highly recommended!

A great classic!
I really enjoyed hearing it and the narrator did a very good job. I never got around to reading it when I was younger so I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.

Excellent story; not my favourite narration
This is a great story and wonderfully written; probably John Wyndham’s best. However, I was somewhat disappointed with the narrator, whose rather monotone presentation threw away most of Wyndham’s beautiful prose … “And we danced, on the brink of an unknown future, to an echo from a vanished past.”

this story can expand on in so many directions. Please keep it going. I thought all was Russian conspiracy.

Very enjoyable.
A true classic dystopian tail. Narration was good but too often some poor editing seemed to taint my immersion. This is a book I’d love to be able to make time for and read but modern life means an audiobook is a necessity to be able to enjoy all the literature I wish to experience with so little time to do so.

Very strong beginning
The book really grabbed me from the very start. The idea is not something I encounter too often in a post apocalyptic scenarios. However around the mid point the story started to drag a little and it didn't quite give the explanations I was hoping for. I know a lot of authors prefer to leave it to our imagination but a little details would have helped. I think John Wyndham also finds a good way to present the worst possible human beings. The narrative was a bit dry too. It seems to fit the protagonist's character but wasn't very engaging. Still far from the worst though.
