When Brian De Palma agreed to allow Julie Salamon unlimited access to the film production of Tom Wolfe's best-selling book The Bonfire of the Vanities, both director and journalist must have felt like they were on to something big. How could it lose? But instead Salamon got a front-row seat at the Hollywood disaster of the decade. She shadowed the film from its early stages through the last of the eviscerating reviews, and met everyone from the actors to the technicians to the studio executives. They'd all signed on for a blockbuster, but there was a sense of impending doom from the start - heart-of-gold characters replaced Wolfe's satiric creations; affable Tom Hanks was cast as the patrician heel; Melanie Griffith appeared mid-shoot with new, bigger breasts. With a keen eye and ear, Salamon shows us how the best of intentions turned into a legendary Hollywood debacle.

Pour les aimants du 7e art, ce livre est une source impressionnante de détails sur une production cinématographique troublée et emblématique de son époque. C'est aussi une analyse franche de la mécanique hollywoodienne de la fin des années 80. Brian De Palma n'a de toute évidence pas réalisé son meilleur film avec "Le bûcher des vanités" mais a nul doute réalisé son meilleur coup littéraire en laissant Julie Salamon suivre de A à Z les tribulations de Dé Palma et son équipe pendant près de deux ans.

Incredible insight into the world of filmmaking and everything that goes into getting a film made, whether it’s a huge success or a critical and box-office failure (like Bonfire of the Vanities). Either way, it’s a huge endeavour that everyone involved enters hoping and working towards a success, regardless of the final result. Also serves as a look at the career of one of the great filmmakers of our time - Brian de Palma. Very well told, with tons of input from De Palma himself through interviews.

Very long, very in depth, mostly interesting. Now I understand how movies go over budget. You will hear how difficult and costly certain scenes were to shoot, only to hear at the end they were left on the cutting room floor. A jaw dropping waste of money. Lots of stuff went wrong, maybe this happens to a lesser degree in other films? I learned that certain stars have bodyguards not to save them from fans, but to save them from themselves (aka, preemptive anger management, when fans behave badly and the star would otherwise strike out). The author narrated her own book, to mixed results. She actually did not bad, but you never hear swallowing or intakes of breath from professional narrators. There was a big name producer for this book, so I’d have thought they would have coached her, given her a high end microphone, or edited those out … or all three. If you’re into movies and stars, you’ll probably enjoy this. For me, it was just ok.
