À propos de cet audio

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK • “Delightful . . . [a] captivating and slyly subversive fictional paean to the real women whose work on the Oxford English Dictionary went largely unheralded.”—The New York Times Book Review

“A marvelous fiction about the power of language to elevate or repress.”—Geraldine Brooks, New York Times bestselling author of People of the Book

Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words that have been discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

As she grows up, Esme realizes that words and meanings relating to women’s and common folks’ experiences often go unrecorded. And so she begins in earnest to search out words for her own dictionary: the Dictionary of Lost Words. To do so she must leave the sheltered world of the university and venture out to meet the people whose words will fill those pages.

Set during the height of the women’s suffrage movement and with the Great War looming, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. Inspired by actual events, author Pip Williams has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story. The Dictionary of Lost Words is a delightful, lyrical, and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"A beautiful exploration of history and the power of language. For anybody who loves words and celebrates them, this subversive story weaves together love, loss and literature in a perfectly lyrical way.”—Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club May ’22 Pick)

“This remarkable novel tries to rectify a glaring oversight in the historical accounts of the first Oxford English Dictionary—the contributions of women . . . without whom the English language wouldn’t have evolved as fully and colorfully as it has.”Boston magazine

“Enchanting, sorrowful, and wonderfully written, the book is a one-of-a-kind celebration of language and its importance in our lives. A must-have.”Library Journal (starred review)

Beautiful and rich

This book was a delight, from its exploration of history and linguistics and social class, to the very engaging story of Esme that holds it all together. Beautiful and moving without being trite or saccharine. Lovely reading by Pippa Bennett-Warner.

An excellent book

Very well written and performed. Make one appreciate the value of words and the implicit biases from male domination in our society.

Brilliantly read but you may need a print copy too

This book tells the story about the completion of the first Oxford English Dictionary.

Sound riveting?

Yes, this book is about words but it's about so much more than words. It's about feminism and social classes in the early 1900's. It's about the woman's suffrage movement and WWI. Mostly it's about decisions and friendships and longing, and self-acceptance.

It starts slow, but stick with it. You need to get to know Esme and Da and the fabulous Lizzie.

This story is so filled with wonderful characters who will make you think. I laughed, I learned a lot, and I cried. No review will do it justice and it may not be for everyone, but I've already ordered a copy for a friend.

Note: I kept a print version handy because there are uncommon words and strong accents and I really didn't want to miss a thing.

Breathtaking

This book, the writing and narration, is stunning. I've not been so moved by a book in years. If some random comment of some random listener can influence you at all, then take my advice: listen now!

Absolutely my new favourite book!

I loved this book so much that I listened to it twice! The narration is brilliantly done and the story griped me. Well worth the listen!

The importance of words and their history

It took me a few chapters to get into this book, perhaps because the beginning is very descriptive, and it takes a while for things to unfold. However, I loved the book, the historical perspective, and the end is very moving. The narrator was also excellent and added to the story. Highly recommend.

Both heartwarming and heartbreaking

A simultaneously beautifully imaginative and brutally truthful story. This book makes you realize how much of our language, history, and knowledge has been lost, and will continue to be lost, simply because only certain types of people have the power and privilege to decide what is true, valuable and worth recording. At the same time, you are able to become lost in the fictional wave of a complicated coming of age, romance, bravery, perseverance, and the many forms of love, loss and devastation that come and go throughout human existence. A thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable read that I highly recommend.
