Compelling!
A most compelling listen - couldn’t put it down. Forsyth is such a marvellous writer - such detail, such specialty knowledge, marvellous characters, and of course, a brilliant plot. The whole rendered wonderfully by one of my favourite readers, Frederick Davidson. Thank you Audible.

Brilliant Story Let Down
This impeccably-researched and well-planned book is effectively a how-to manual for organizing and orchestrating a coup d'etat. One-time embedded war journalist Frederick Forsyth fashions a novel about a small group of mercenaries planning & conducting the overthrow of a small African government in order to secure mineral resources (legend has it that the book was used as a template for a real political overthrow in 1979).
The book is fascinating, twisty-turny, and features memorable characters. It's a thought-provoking story featuring international intrigue.
Almost criminally, Blackstone Audio Inc. then casts Frederick Davidson to read the book. His enunciation, timbre, and pacing are fine, but his voice-acting is often awful and his cadence features frequent wheezy breaths that are almost painfully distracting. The sound editors apparently make almost no effort to mitigate the sharp sounds - in fact transforming them into something tinny with inexplicable equalization and mixing.
Altogether, 'The Dogs Of War' belongs in your library.. but this 6.5/10-star presentation isn't worth your time. Even as a 'Plus' selection, it was hard to get through. Find another recording (there are lots).

Needs a Metronome
I found the narration the worst I've ever heard. Very aggravating the varying narration rate, pumping out words at times much faster than others I have heard, and then slowing right down and giving extended pause for periods and commas.

Fun escapist adventure. Poor performance and recording.
A fun and engaging story (though the author’s portrayal of women is cringeworthy and embarrassing and decidedly 1970’s.) to his credit, his portrayal of race holds up pretty well in 2022. The audio recording is marred by what sounds like a tv or radio talk show playing incessantly in the background: through headphones the audio is nearly unlistenable. Furthermore , the narrator sounds untrained in the use of a microphone: volume levels fluctuate wildly! No wonder Audible is giving this away for free!
