À propos de cet audio

Through no fault of his own, the once human Jim Eckert had become a dragon. Unfortunately, his beloved Angie had remained human. But in this magical land anything could happen.

To make matter worse, Angie had been taken prisoner by an evil dragon and was held captive in the impenetrable Loathly Tower. So in this land where humans were edible and beasts were magical - where spells worked and logic didn't-- Jim Eckert had a big, strange problem.

Loved it as a book, and loved it as audio book

I have read this at least twice
It is rare for me to read a book more than once. All my children, as teenagers enjoyed it as well. The audiobook was just as good. The reader does it justice.

Best for YA boys

Best for YA boys who enjoy medieval English fantasy settings. The original source material came out in 1957 and it shows. I really liked this when I read it 40+ years ago. Listening to it now…it’s OK, but I think I would have been disappointed if it hadn’t been free with the membership. The big message: get prepared as much as practical before facing danger; look for friends. Happy ending, of course, but not much help for young boys figuring out who to befriend - basically all the good guys are tough and strong and admirable and readily accept the main character simply because he claims to be a foreign aristocrat. Sigh.

Boehmer brings it!

Jim Eckert has been turned into a dragon; his human girlfriend, Angie, has been kidnapped by another dragon. So it’s off to Loathly Tower to save his love. It’s a classic fantasy adventure that inspired many future writers. Some interesting stuff but it also dragged in spots; it’s a beef of mine with world-building novels, getting through some of the dreck to the actual story, but it’s fun. I always enjoy Paul Boehmer as a narrator, too.

Book's sexism super annoying

Main character is a sexist jerk who expects submissiveness from his girlfriend who has no character besides damsel in distress. Story itself rather boring.

*Spoilers* Poor female characters, awful MC

Ugh. This was a slog to get through. If you're bothered by a lack of non-accessorized female characters, pass on this book.

1. The characters were okay, but the MC is an arse. His whole personality is "dude who is inconvenienced by his partner and her boss". At one point he's flipping his lid because he's been waiting outside her workplace for 10 mins. DUDE. It usually takes that long to pack up and get out. Grow up and learn some patience.

2. There are exactly three female characters in this book. One is the MC's girlfriend/damsel in distress. Two is the secondary character's girlfriend, who also becomes a damsel in distress before we are introduced to her, and who fades into the background within a chapter of her rescue. Three has potential - she's the daughter of a dude with a band of bandits and a reputation and she has serious talent and strength with a bow. But her entire personality revolves around fawning over the MC, being chased by and rejecting one of the other key characters, and trying to get her father to help out.

3. The end of the book - my stars.

MC: Should we stay in this fantasy world?
His GF: oH hOnEy I dOn'T cArE, tHiS iS yOuR cHoIcE aNd I sUpPoRt WhAtEvEr YoU tHiNk Is BeSt

Seriously. She has No Opinion on whether to go back to their own world. She has spent this entire book captive by various evil forces. Even if she'd been having a more chill time, I *guarantee* any good character would actually have ideas on whether or not to abandon their family, friends, job, worldly possessions, lifestyle, etc. for something *completely* different.

If none of that bothers you, it's a light-hearted romp in a parallel universe midieval Europe with dragons.
