complex characters and discussions of identity
I loved this duology! I thought the characters were very well fleshed out, they were flawed, made mistakes but were all trying to do the best they could. The world building was fantastic! I especially loved the way the topic of identity and nationhood was discussed. I really felt like I got to understand why each group was the way they were, how deep the hurt was and how difficult it is move forward from that to a place where each group could respect the others history and identity. Neither side was good or bad, they just were. I found it so applicable to some of the geopolitics of today in a way that it made me quite emotional. It also didnt end on a happily ever after, which I appreciated. Very well done. I think my only criticism of this second book, is that it felt like it wrapped up too quickly. How Lazmet died and the new nation of Shotet was formed. It felt like something was missing. But overall, I loved it.

narrators 10/10. book 10/10.

Great second in a series
This book has great characters, and the writing is substantial. Keeps you guessing and there is good action to follow. I love listening to books! #Audible1

Not as good as the first
The narrator’s do a great job at bringing the story to life, but the storyline has a very slow buildup and takes a long time to get anywhere. The plot twists and reveals were bordering on expected, it’s an ok book, worth listening to if you’re invested in the series but compared to the first book it falls short and is missing the pace and energy found in Carve The Mark.

Okay..... Not as good as the First
Loved the first book in this series. I found that this one took a long time to get going and was not near as attention grabbing.
