À propos de cet audio
"If I could have foreseen the future, I would have married the first man who asked me!"
Tongues were set wagging when Elizabeth Markham's glamorous young parents were killed, sinking their only child to the unspeakable class of poor relation. Forced to live with her cruel, miserly uncle Julius, Elizabeth is forbidden to partake in the season's festivities. Marriage is her only escape, and she enacts a daring plan to trick her way into the Duke of Dunster's exclusive house party, to snare one of the eligible dandies sure to dance attendance on her.
Her plan proceeds swimmingly, as Elizabeth flirts with all but the arrogant Lord Charles Lufford, considered to be quite a catch. She ignores him thoroughly until her uncle discovers her deception and Charles saves her - by announcing their engagement!
But Elizabeth's troubles are far from over, for in her absence she had come into an inheritance. And her uncle, along with one other sinister party would rather see her perish than receive it.

Painful
Anyone who has read M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin or Hamish MacBeth books should not be lured into thinking that the writing here is of the same quality. This is definitely an earlier work which is a trite version of historic romance. No trope goes unused and the hero's bad temper along with unbelievable plot elements make cringing hard to avoid.
The weak story is made worse by the nasal twang of the narrator every time she attempts a male voice. It is a most painful listen.

No evidence of flirting
Not her best work. Weak story altogether with lots of loose ends, and absolutely no flirting. But the woman is made to believe the label. In a post Me Too era this should be scraped from the shelves. I just can't even put the words together to express how wrong this seemingly innocent story is. Wolf in sheep's clothing.
I've heard the narrator before, and this also is not her best work.

low confidence and self-esteem
I'm beginning to realize that I am not a fan of M.C
Beaton's stories, I want them to be like cozy mysteries or cute Victorian romances and i'm always left dissatisfied by the end of each story.
I didn't find any joy in reading any of the Agatha raisins novels, I found her pretentious, and the stories just annoying. I didn't like any of the Hamish novels. I found him a lazy detective that just happens to eventually solve a crime, and I don't even know what this novel was. It was short, but very confusing/frustrating.
It's titled the flirt, but there is no flirting! even if there was flirting, isn't that what the season was for in those times ? isn't it for the young women to flirt and decide who captures their eye?
What I found by listening to this book is that it dwells so much on Elizabeth's lack of self-esteem and her lack of self-confidence. The only time she feels confident is when the men are adoring her. even up to the end of the novel, this doesn't change. you would think that once she find out about her inheritance she would stand confident in herself and her feelings for Charles, knowing she would not be a burden, but nope, she has that air of low confidence till the last minute of the book....literally.
