À propos de cet audio
The Scottish Hebrides
The annual West Uist literary festival - The Gathering - always attracts the best in the business. But with the tiny island population suddenly doubling, the local police force is stretched to breaking point. And this year they have to deal with more than just drunken fights and rowdy behavior....
Ranald Buchanan, the local poet, is found dead, with his head brutally caved in, and Inspector Torquil McKinnon is brought in to investigate. Did Ranald trip and fall, as suggested? Or is something more sinister happening?
Before Torquil can find out more, another victim is found. The island is on lockdown. There is a serial killer in their midst. And this time the victim is someone very close to him.
Now finding justice is personal. Torquil is out for revenge. Can he solve the mystery before the killer strikes again? Or will more bodies fall victim to The Gathering Murders?

Loved the setting in the Hebrides….the busy plot not so much!
I was looking forward to this Scottish crime story set in a most unusual and remote locale, but found too much going on, too many players, and all of them linked by a contrived array of dark, improbable coincidences. For me, there were too many ingredients in the pot….
with too many players withholding

A few too many murders
The overall writing wasn't horrendous, but too many murders made the story quite improbable. Narration saved the novel.

long winded with no suspense
This book was not what I expected. It is not a murder mystery where you can follow along and try to guess who the murderer is, or even what the link is. It felt like the author just tried to cram a bunch of murders into the book but forgot about creating a story where there's suspense and intrigue.
To be honest, the author forgot to include a lot of things. I've just finished listening to the book and I couldn't give you a description of anything. not of the city or ville that they live in, not any of the characters, not of the murder scenes, not of the killer. It's like just words on a page. Where you read them, and then instantly forget them.
I expected a lot more given the length of the book, but this fell flat.
The entire story boiled down to the last 10 minutes of the book and even then, after the reveal, I was very disappointed.
You know those books that you listen to or read and you think you've figured out the link between the victims or it's blatantly obvious ( Or told to you? like in this story,) but then the real link is revealed, and you're blown away? This doesn't happen in this book.
The initial link is to the second murder victim but in the last ten minutes of the book, when the true link is revealed, it makes no sense at all. It's supposed to be revenge killing but the murderer is just killing indiscriminately. 1 or 2 of the victims, yes, part of the revenge plot but what about the others?
This book seems to have an identity crisis. It's part psychological thriller, part murder mystery, who done it, but wholly long-winded, boring and not at all suspenseful.
The only thing that kept me listening to this story to the very end is the narrator and their awesome accent, c'est tout.
