Wrote this review on my reread this because Thief in the Night just came out, and then listened to it a third time this year. I love it! Robin and Hart are both such interesting, quirky characters, and I love watching them figure out how much they care for one another (and come to have a better understanding of themselves at the same time). These days, I'm a bit leery of enemy-to-lover as a trope, because if it's not done well, it leaves me really uncomfortable, as there tends to be a protracted period where at least one of the MCs is awful to the other. But KJ Charles did such a wonderful job of making both characters have their good reasons and their flaws for doing what they were doing and reacting the way they did (and being both right and wrong about it, lol), and it made the transformation of their relationship very believable for me.

It was fun how expectations were constantly undercut and no one did quite what you expected them to do (or possibly what they themselves thought they were going to do, lol) as they figured out how to follow their hearts (even if their hearts led to mathematics!) Supporting characters and main characters were just so much fun to read. I couldn't tell how it was going to come to a happy ending until it did, and it was a truly lovely resolution. This was a joy to read and listen to.

A new brilliant one of KJ’s works! Band Sinister (stand-alone) and The Magpie Lord (series) are some of my favourites of her books and I’d rank this as another! The story is full, vibrant, and deliciously steamy (I don’t know what word to use that would feel less awkward written out...), as is usually the case with KJ’s books.
Cheeky, witty, and flawed, the characters have depth enough to give weight to the story and keep you invested in the outcome of their lives.

The narrator does a fantastic job of distinguishing his voices for each character. His voice is warm and well rounded generally, but he has a really decent range in the voices/accents he can pull off.
The one and only gripe I have is that one or two (minor) character voices feel “off” or awkward to me? Not enough to enjoy the book any less! Just enough for me to notice and be a bit distracted by in the moment.

Basically:
I’m quite stiff in trying to write this review but I really liked this book and really like this author and really like this narrator.

Would and will recommend this to a friend!

Can I give more than 5 stars? This is my favourite of KJ's novels that I have devoured to date.

This is a lighthearted Regency, but also an observation of an apparently impossible romance within the confines of the societal mores of those times, which also explores at the need for security (emotionally as well as financially) for those that do not have it.

One of the later chapters has the most transcendently enjoyable verbal take down that was annihilating yet completely fulfilled the implicit etiquette of public discourse amongst the upper echelons of society delivered with verve by the narrator. Totally joyous listening.

The old fashioned style was done well but at the expense of any emotion, with everything (including the smut) very dry and devoid of feeling. The narrator had the voice of an irrate maths teacher for Hart, he sounded about 60yrs old and was very unenjoyable to listen to as a character. The female characters were much more interesting, would have enjoyed the story from their POV. The stakes were so much higher for them, where Robin and Hart's relationship was pretty unconvincing. I've still got an hr left and am really only interested in what happens to the subcharacters.
