À propos de cet audio
Captain Ean Tephe is a man of faith, whose allegiance to his lord and to his ship is uncontested. The Bishopry Militant knows this — and so, when it needs a ship and crew to undertake a secret, sacred mission to a hidden land, Tephe is the captain to whom the task is given.
Tephe knows from the start that his mission will be a test of his skill as a leader of men and as a devout follower of his god. It’s what he doesn’t know that matters: to what ends his faith and his ship will ultimately be put — and that the tests he will face will come not only from his god and the Bishopry Militant, but from another, more malevolent source entirely....
Author John Scalzi has ascended to the top ranks of modern science fiction with the best-selling, Hugo-nominated novels Old Man’s War and Zoe’s Tale. Now he tries his hand at fantasy, with a dark and different novella that takes your expectations of what fantasy is and does, and sends them tumbling.
Say your prayers... and behold The God Engines.

dark story about gods and faith
It's well written and narrated. The world and characters are well established and feel distinct. There are some interesting concepts. The main character is likeable.
It's also dark, kinda depressing, and in my opinion what is supposed to be the payoff of the story is a let down.
If you are into grimdark stuff like Warhammer 40k or Joe Abercrombie this could be worth it. Otherwise it's pretty debatable. Maybe you need to be in the right mood or mindset.
Without getting into specifics or spoilers there is an intense body horror/gore scene that comes up and hits you out of the blue. It's effective at being off putting, but if that isn't what you are looking for and not something you would normally be good with then it just feels messed up and you end up wanting to finish the audiobook just to get it over with instead of because you actually care or want to know what happens.
It's good for what it is, but you have to be into dark stuff and ready for it. This falls into the horror side of fantasy.
Thematically it's about how religion is corrupt. As a theme I think it's well executed, but the theme itself feels kinda boring and easy and overused.
