An unforgettable, life-affirming novel about a woman living on her own terms at last and reclaiming the friendship of a lifetime, for listeners of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frye and Me Before You
Frances Delaney is staring down the last days of her life. Looking back over her fifty-eight years with wit and no small amount of regret, she sees not the life she wanted but the one that happened. An idyllic childhood in the small Newfoundland fishing town of Safe Harbour was darkened by the loss of her father at sea, an unwanted pregnancy and a betrayal by her closest friend, Annie Malone. Frances and Annie were inseparable, and this rupture rocked Frances to the core. In the aftermath, she fled to St. John’s and a solitary life nothing like what she and Annie had dreamed of as their grand escape. Now, with the help of her young, optimistic friend Edie, Frances begins a journey toward resolution and back to Annie and Safe Harbour. With these good women in her corner, Frances can at last chart her course to living on her own terms, right to the very end.
A powerfully touching celebration of friendship and forgiveness, The Good Women of Safe Harbour is about a woman who finally gives herself a chance to love and be loved. It’s a story that is impossible to read with dry eyes.

While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. Very enjoyable
Frances Delaney led a simple, uncomplicated life, not asking for nor expecting much. Some would say it was a lonely existence, but for Frances it was what she had, and what she knew, and it was enough. That was until she was confronted by death, and she reflected on her circumstance.
Frances didn’t have it easy. She lost her father to the sea when she was young and then, after having a teenage trauma to deal with, she lost her mother to suicide. To complicate matters, at the same time, she believed her best friend abandoned her to the pull of young love. All these things were a catalyst for unfulfilled dreams and a solitary life.
It was also basis for the decision she made. She didn’t want to prolong the inevitable of her terminal diagnosis and chose to go out on her own terms and in her own time. But the shortened state of life will not disappoint Frances, she won’t die as she lived, but rather perhaps die as she was meant to live, surrounded by love, in the place she loved most, Safe Harbour.
Bobbi French introduces you to Frances, living a simple life and deciding on a complex or maybe controversial death. But it is not a sad story. It is a story of truth, love, and forgiveness intertwined with laughter and discovery. You will love Frances, flaws and all, her alienated friend who is brought back into her life by a teenager who won’t let Frances down. Frances learns of love, friendship, and satisfaction almost in a “coming of age” story for fifty something year olds as time runs out. The author weaves the final straw on the basket in the last few seconds to wrap up and complete this story.
I loved the language and the simplicity of the complex situation. It is well written, covers a myriad of subjects, some quite in-depth and others merely scratch the surface. But it is well told, well written, and deserves to be read.

Existential and beautiful
As someone who has many connections to this book and the characters’ different experiences, I found this to be a very beautiful story. Well written, excellent character development, and a very meaningful storyline about a woman from rural Newfoundland. This is not a light read, this book has substance, and I would place it amongst my favorites alongside “When Breath Becomes Air.”

Heartbroken that a Newfoundlander didn’t perform this book
Newfoundlanders have a very specific dialect and accent, that I was so looking forward to when listening to this book… I am stunned that it was performed by someone who seemingly had no connection to The Rock. Very poor decision. The book was engaging, nonetheless.

Beautifully woven story of true love and companionship among women
This sweet novel is 5 stars all around. The main character, Frances, is perfectly portrayed as a vulnerable, lonely, yet strong woman who finally comes out of her shell with the help of young Edie. It is a heartfelt story of compassion and forgiveness, and I wept at the end. A terrific read.

A very real story of friendship and life
I enjoyed how realistic the lives and friendship was depicted between the 2 main characters. I also enjoyed how the death and dying was part of the story was developed.
