I thought I was destined for an early grave. Apparently, fate had other plans for me.
My name is Jake. After twenty-three years of life, all I have to my name is a dead-end job and an undiagnosed metabolic disorder that has the doctors baffled.
Everything changed on my birthday when I found a magical key that followed me home. It led me to the Halls of Magic, a multiversal repository of arcane knowledge that will allow me the chance to cure my broken body and unlock arcane power.
However, the Halls are long abandoned and overrun with man-eating monsters. Also, my Spellbook looks like it's straight out of a video game. When I turned to the Aspects of Magic for help, they broke free of their crystalline prisons and then moved in with me back on Earth. To say they have a lot to learn about being human is an understatement.

Good book spoiled by a sex scene
This is actually a pretty decent read. The main character is an orphan working a minimum wage job and dealing with constant pain. And then he turns 23 and ends up invited to the halls of magic where he becomes a mage, which is where things get exciting!...or not.
Because the halls are abandoned. Jake may be the last mage in existence, and he has no idea what he's doing. And meanwhile, he still needs to pay rent. The main character is relatable and nice, the kind you want to root for. While he's given power, it's not easy and he's not overpowered. You want to listen more to find out what happened to his mother when she disappeared and why the Halls of Magic were abandoned. And the voice actors (plural - one for each gender) are great, able to portray different voices well.
Really, I only have one complaint...but it spoiled the book for me. The main character meets a living personification of magic and accidentally turns her human. Okay. She has to learn about being human - like what eating is, and how to pee. Okay. She falls in love with him. Okay. And then, with a child-like innocence, she has sex with him. Emphasis on 'child like'. She doesn't understand her own body, let alone what sex means. It made me feel sick to listen to it.
Other than that, the book was a good listen. The author clearly has potential! I just hope the author's next book decides to make a less innocent and naive love interest.

New Magic Stories
I liked the flow of the story. Easy to picture the characters. Love the cover, who doesn’t like busty blondes.
When will the next one come out?

I absolutely crushed this book, couldn't put it down.
I loved the different ways the Aspects interact with the main character. Using mathematics to figure out magic was cool too. Romantic parts are great and not overbearing. I'm also loving the unique way of tracking and displaying RPG stats and skills.
I'm really enjoying Emily's writing style and I'm soon going to catch up on all her books. I'm excited for what's next!
