À propos de cet audio
As the nation’s foremost investigators of the paranormal, Isolde and Warren Wilby are accustomed to bumping up against things that go bump in the night. They have made quite a name for themselves as the Hexologists: detectives of the uncanny, the monstrous, the strange. After a decade of wedded bliss and dozens of fantastical adventures, there is little in the world that can still surprise them.
But when a famous artist dies under suspicious circumstances, Isolde finds herself investigating a murder that may not have happened, and a crime scene that seems to shift beneath her feet. Not one to be easily thwarted, Isolde is compelled to take greater and greater risks in pursuit of her elusive answers. Meanwhile, the laws that govern magic appear to be breaking, and those cracks are spreading to the everyday world.
The mystery will carry the devoted duo to seedy underworlds, enchanted gardens, and subterranean military zoos. Old friends will come to the Wilbies’ aid as they infiltrate secret societies, battle vicious imps, and flee from a pack of venomous wolves. Equipped with Isolde’s hexes, Warren’s muscle, and an enchanted bag full of magical relics, the Hexologists will have to risk life and limb to unravel the riddle at the heart of A Tangle of Time.

“Fantastic! The Hexologists fizzes eloquently with wit and elegance, but also has marvelous worldbuilding and an excellent plot - and a central pair of characters who I quite simply love. A cocktail of a book made with the very best champagne.”—Genevieve Cogman, author of The Invisible Library
"Bancroft brilliantly inaugurates a new fantasy series with this suspenseful and humorous introduction to “private investigators of the paranormal.” This light and charming tale encompasses a twisty mystery, detailed Victorian-esque worldbuilding, and nuanced protagonists who love each other dearly, all relayed in Bancroft’s superior prose. Readers will be eager to see how the series evolves."—Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

Blurb Review: A superb follow up to the first Hexologists adventure, A Tangle of Time never quite reaches the heights of the first tale, takes a bit to get into, and seems to meander along the way, but comes together splendidly in an explosive finale that weaves together all the threads in such a satisfying manner. Bancroft continues to climb the list of my favourite authors and I can't wait to read whatever he puts out next.
Worldbuilding/Immersion: 5☆
Bancroft is my favourite worldbuilding author. Period. I adore his fantastical settings and menagerie of strange creatures.
Characters: 4☆
I love the Wilbys and the supporting cast it quite good - if not as shining as those from the first novel.
Plot: 3.75☆
It feels quite meandering at first and there were a few tangents that made me question if the story knew where it was going, but by the end it all come together so cleverly and nothing was wasted in the slightest.
Investment/Stakes/Emotional Impact: 4.5☆
The final act was highly tense as the race to solve the mystery and put everything right really hits home for the protagonists.
Writing/Prose: 4.75☆
Bancroft is an artist with his prose...and sometimes the brush gets away from him just a little bit!
Audiobook Narration: 4.25☆
The narrator nails Isolde and is quite good for the other voices as well.
Content Warning: The titular married couple enjoy each other's company and aren't too shy about it - nothing graphic is described, but there are some ribald flirtations and fade-to-black type scenes scattered throughout. A different couple collects nude statues which are anatomically described with an air of artistic-critique.
