À propos de cet audio

Summer 1924: on the night of a glittering society party by the lake of a grand English country house, a young poet takes his life. The only witnesses are sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, and they will never speak to each other again. Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, one-time housemaid of Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director making a film about the poet’s suicide. Ghosts awaken and memories, long consigned to the dark reaches of Grace’s mind, begin to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to emerge – something history has forgotten but Grace never could. Set as the Edwardian summer finally surrenders to the decadent twenties, The House at Riverton is a multi-million-copy bestselling novel and one of the most successful debuts of all time.

Wonderfully written and read!

This story was lovely. The travel back in time, compared to the current-day parts of the story really gave way to the character’s memory of the past and her state of mind. I wish the story never ended!

A Serpentine Historical Mystery

This is Kate Morton's first novel and having read many of her others, the Secret Keeper being my favourite, I could see her style forming in this one. Her novels take their time, layering the story as they go, building on the characters, times and places. There are hints of what is to come in the earlier parts and I also find them interesting from the historical point of view. How different life was and how WW1 changed many things for women's roles, the returning soldiers with shell shock or changed personalities, the ensuing roaring twenties and the breaking down of the class system. Grace, a servant at Riverton from a young age is our anchor to the story, swapping in time from her elderly birds eye view as a 99 year old lady, back to her time as a servant and then a ladies maid as she recounts the events. She is asked to help give background for a film that is being made about a tragedy that happened at Riverton in the 1920s. Although a lot of the story is about the past and the sisters Hannah and Emmeline there is also much about Grace and what happened to her own life, her being the character I was the most invested in. This novel has all Kate Morton's usual twists and turns and I thought the narrator was very good.
