Description
Banned in Russia, Tolstoy's The Kingdom of God Is Within You was deemed a threat to church and state. The culmination of a lifetime's thought, it espouses a commitment to Jesus's message of turning the other cheek. In a bold and original treatise, Tolstoy shows his readers clearly why they must reject violence of any sort—even that sanctioned by the state or the church—and urges them to look within themselves to find the answers to questions of morality.
In 1894, one of the first English translations of this book found its way into the hands of a young Gandhi. Inspired by its message of nonresistance to evil, the Mahatma declared it a source of "independent thinking, profound morality, and truthfulness". Much of this work's emotional and moral appeal lies in its emphasis on fair treatment of the poor and working class. Its view of Christianity, not as a mystic religion but as a workable philosophy originating from the words of a remarkable teacher, extends its appeal to secular and religious listeners alike.

Perfectly applicable today, if you can realize it
The irony is that the knowledge learned in this book is required to see that the book is absolutely and completely relevant in every way to this very day. Anyone familiar with the truths of Eckhart Tolle or similar teachings will be able to pick up on this from the beginning pages, but otherwise it could be a challenge to get deep into this text. All readers must read on until they fully see the truth in it, and one by one, we can fulfill the destiny of each of us, and subsequently of all men and women of the world. It is this simple and this powerful. Some of us know things without a single doubt, because they are not of us or our minds. Only a few times in the text does Tolstoy perhaps get lost in his mind, and some anger or even hypocrisy himself, and after all he is just a fallable human like the rest of us, but it's a rare section of this book where this happens. Most of it is otherworldly, like all works carrying this much truth within them. I hope this work is life changing for many readers; it should be.
