À propos de cet audio
New York Times best-selling author Karen White weaves a captivating story of friendship, love, and betrayal that moves between war-torn London during the Blitz and the present day.
London, 1939. Beautiful and ambitious Eva Harlow and her American best friend, Precious Dubose, are trying to make their way as fashion models. When Eva falls in love with Graham St. John, an aristocrat and Royal Air Force pilot, she can’t believe her luck - she’s getting everything she ever wanted. Then the Blitz devastates her world, and Eva finds herself slipping into a web of intrigue, spies, and secrets. As Eva struggles to protect her friendship with Precious and everything she holds dear, all it takes is one unwary moment to change their lives forever....
London, 2019. American journalist Maddie Warner, whose life has been marked by the tragic loss of her mother, travels to London to interview Precious about her life in pre-WWII London. Maddie has been careful to close herself off to others, but in Precious she recognizes someone whose grief rivals her own - but unlike Maddie, Precious hasn’t allowed it to crush her. Maddie finds herself drawn to both Precious and to Colin, her enigmatic surrogate nephew. As Maddie gets closer to her, she begins to unravel Precious’s haunting past - a story of friendship, betrayal, and the unremembered acts of kindness and of love.

But an unexpected offer from the US military has brought her to Lisbon with a new mission: posing as a librarian while working undercover as a spy gathering intelligence. The Secrets of London
I love all the secrets that a past London holds. The author does a fantastic job of weaving the past with the present. As the story line unfolds, you are kept guessing. Your heart breaks for love lost and what could have been.
I am consistently drawn to these stories of a wartime we shall (hopefully) never know or understand. Perhaps that is the reason, I yearn to feel closer to those that served, in whatever capacity, so I could be free. Well done Saskia and Barrie.

A good read “listen”.
A little slow to start but became more riveting as the story unfolded and the last few chapters were a Sunday afternoon marathon to get to the finish.

Trying to Say Too Much
Narrators: Saskia Maarleveld is excellent as usual. The accent and voice that Barrie Kreinik chose for Maddie sounds nasal rather than slightly southern and, unfortunately, annoying for a great deal of the book. I would have believed a change of accent, to a big city one, since she had moved to a big city. All of Barrie's other character's voices were excellent.
Author: The story is a good one and enjoyable. For me, there was too much description of less important events, people, things, etc. and too much mis-direction. Some description is wanted and necessary to add richness to a story but not too much. I, also, wanted to strangle one of the characters and swat her, but the web she became entangled in was possible considering the times. Also, it would have been interesting to find out how Graham's present-day family feels and deals with the "big secret."
There are a lot of interesting facts and history here and I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book/story.
