Description
Young, lovely Norwegian Agnes Gerner is waging a dangerous and secret fight. Outwardly, she is a devoted Nazi sympathizer engaged to a prominent businessman. In fact, she is part of an underground resistance doing everything to win the war against the Germans. The only hope she has of being reunited with the man she truly loves - who serves under the code name "Pilgrim" - is if the Nazis are defeated. Of course, there's no guarantee that she'll be alive when that happens....
Many years later, three sets of remains are found in a popular Oslo forest - two adults and a child. Despite his boss's call to not spend extra time on the old case, Detective Tommy Bergmann cannot help but dig deeper, especially as he uncovers connections to a more recent murder. As he unravels the secrets of the past, it becomes clear that everything is permissible in war - and that only those who reject love can come out victorious.

good
I have been avoiding listening to this. I'm going through my Audible library and giving each book a second listen. It helps pass the time at work. I'm down to the books that I probably wouldn't have read or listened to twice if I wasn't working a tedious job and didn't want to spend more money on new books.
Here's the thing. This was in no way a bad book, IMO. So why was I avoiding it?
World War II stories aren't my thing. They're stressful and depressing. This one was as stressful and depressing as they come, with a real sense of urgency and danger.
The scenes set in the past seemed to be the focus, but both past and present were skillfully plotted and came together in an extremely satisfying way in the end. It was a clever little mystery, with a setting that ramped up the intensity (and feelings of discomfort in the reader, heh).
The present day detective is an interesting figure, a violent spousal abuser, but the way he's written, he's someone neither sympathetic nor detestable. Like, he's clearly an awful guy, but he knows it and is actively trying to be less awful, but also knows that what he did was unforgivable and he's not expecting forgiveness. It was a bold choice. The other characters, especially the past protagonist, were similarly well rendered.
I did like it, or at least appreciate it, but dang. I don't plan on listening to this one again, at least not for a really long time.

Half way through
Books are very subjective and this one is not for me. I bought it because of the narrator and his outstanding performance in other books.
But this story just could not keep in involved…gave up half way through.
