Great book but I confess…
… I enjoyed Towles’ other books so much (Gentleman from Moscow, Rules for Civility) that my expectations were unreasonably high. This book was very good, but it didn’t find its way into my heart like the others did.

An American Classic
This book is an instant classic. It should be taught in schools. The characters and the stories will stay with me always.

Ending really unsettling
Loved every minute of the book. Couldn’t stop listening. Didn’t want it to end. Then it did but I just couldn’t accept that the the characters of Woolly, and even more, Emmett would have done what they did. It was an elaborate and exciting ending, well crafted but just destroyed anything I had come to believe about Emmett.

I simply loved this book . The story was very entertaining and often funny.

Another Five Star Novel!
Amor Towles has become one of my favourite storytellers. This novel did not disappoint. His stories transport you to another time and you can imagine yourself there walking among the characters as though you are part of their world. I will no doubt listen to this one again as I have done all his books.

Not what I expected
This book was not at all what I expected. I anticipated reading about a journey along a highway, instead what I got was a journey of humanity and inner conflict.
I loved it, but I'd hesitate to recommend it to most of my friends. If you don't enjoy books that spend a lot of time on character development, don't read this book. It's all about people, motivations and influences; it's about how we interpret right and wrong, about making amends, and about what separates heroes, adventures and intrepid travellers.
It's different from most of the books I read and is equal parts a coming of age story, a Greek classic, and a Shakespearean tragedy. At times the author even throws in a bit of Vaudeville. Don't look for consistency, you won't find it here. Look for artistry and a love of literature.
I seldom reread books but I've promised myself that this is a book that I will read again in a few years. I'm certain that I will find new tidbits to enjoy.
