UGH and ARGH!!
"You are the least traditional woman I know" (the male love interest to the protagonist). HA! She is one of most conventional characters I've read in this genre. Other than doing IVF (itself not exactly the epitome of critiquing norms since her decision is driven by her feeling she needs to be a mother), she does so much conventional stuff it's nauseating, especially accepting the half or non-apologies of men when they slut shame her, act totally self-centered, and otherwise treat her badly. I kept reading mostly because the book was so cheap and because the protagonist seemed to have some moments of awareness of the sexist and selfish behavior of said men, and I kept waiting for her to stand up, but she never did. And the whole way her and the male love interest's relationship starts is kind of creepy and makes them seem like they're elderly or something. Ugh. Also very white and pretty classist. Anyway, running screaming back towards one of my favorites, like Mhairi Mcfarlane (her characters aren't "perfect," but are perfect for that reason).
