She now finds herself facing an entirely different future as Lord Dakon's apprentice.

Although there are long hours of study and self-discipline, Tessia's new life also offers more opportunities than she had ever hoped for, and an exciting new world opens up to her. There are fine clothes and servants - and, she is delighted to learn - regular trips to the great city of Imardin. But along with the excitement and privilege, Tessia is about to discover that her magical gifts bring with them a great deal of responsibility. Events are brewing that will lead nations into war, rival magicians into conflict, and spark an act of sorcery so brutal that its effects will be felt for centuries.

Beautiful performance but story is disjointed

Each chapter begins abruptly without indicating the shift of perspective or location. Pikes performance saves the tale as I’d listen to her read the phone book :-) there are two central characters but no meaningful connection to the two tales - it would have been a stronger story from the perspective of the apprentice- and not being in the confusing secondary storyline. In all fun with magic in a mythical land.

Excellent performance, interesting story

I expected more from the apprentice's story arc but an enjoyable story nonetheless. The narrator's voices were really well done.

A Waste of Rosamund Pike's Brilliance

The story was so abridged as to hardly make sense. I adore Ms. Pike, and I've often said I'd listen to her read the phone book. Next time, I'll opt for the phone book.
Perhaps an unabridged version might be less confusing. What is the point of abridging a decent story anyway? If the author wanted it short, she'd have written it that way.
