He learns the truth of the scripture, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where thieves do not break through nor steal."
The story was originally published in 1911 by Henry Van Dyke, a late 19th and early 20th century American clergyman, and illustrated by Elizabeth Shippen Green, who worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for Harper's Magazine and other publications.
