'A captivating read from Lucinda Riley. Ideal for a book club' – Daily Mail
A lifelong passion. An endless search.
At the height of the British Raj, eleven-year-old Anahita, from a noble but impoverished family, forms a lifelong friendship with the headstrong Princess Indira, the privileged daughter of rich Indian royalty. Becoming the princess's official companion, Anahita accompanies her friend to England just before the outbreak of the Great War. There, she meets the young Donald Astbury – reluctant heir to the magnificent, remote Astbury Estate – and his scheming mother.
Eighty years later, Rebecca Bradley, a young American film star, has the world at her feet. But when her turbulent relationship with her equally famous boyfriend takes an unexpected turn, she's relieved that her latest role, playing a 1920s debutante, will take her away from the glare of publicity to the wilds of Dartmoor in England. Shortly after filming begins at the now-crumbling Astbury Hall, Ari Malik, Anahita's great-grandson, arrives unexpectedly, on a quest for his family's past. What he and Rebecca discover begins to unravel the dark secrets that haunt the Astbury dynasty . . .

But when she returns to the Hall for Christmas she has no recollection of her past association with it – the result of a tragic accident that has blanked out more than two decades of her life. Fabulous book
I have now read every book written by Lucinda Riley. Other than The Seven Sisters, this is my favourite.
I did like them all, but this story is excellent, so we’ll written, and exquisitely performed by Ayesha Kala. She is a magnificent narrator. I will now, as I just find something else to “read”, look for other books she narrates. She is so very talented.

Touching story, wonderful reading
The story was moving, captivating and beautifully written. This is my seventh audiobook by Riley, and they are all memorable. With this one, the narrator was amazing in making the text come alive and I will look for more books performed by Aysha Kala... the timber of her voice and her skill with accents greatly contributed to my enjoyment.

Transphobic language and depictions
The majority of this story was excellent and intriguing, it could have been so good!! Unfortunately, as the mysteries finally begin to unravel, the bigoted and transphobic beliefs begin to emerge. This was unnecessarily cruel, and not imperative to the story. Characters who before had been likeable, lost their lustre when they expressed sentiments like “freak of nature,” and “that Thing,” about a gender non-conforming character. Finally culminating in them needing to be “under lock and key” to protect everyone, under the guise of schizophrenia. All of these elements could have been included and treated gently and with awareness instead of revulsion. For a novel that spans generations, this treatment of gender non-conformity and mental illness, in modern times, felt archaic and intentional.
