“After all, this is Italy”. These are the last words in The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston. He is speaking to the likelihood of the case ever being solved, and the Italian judicial system. Anyone familiar with Amanda Knox’s legal battle when she was accused of the murder of Meredith Kerchrer will be interested in his comments here, as he mentions it.

The whole thing starts innocently enough, two people thinking they can track down all the clues in a murder, or in this instance a series of double murders, in a quest to find answers. Despite being warned against getting involved, these were cold cases after all, they forged ahead.

What they discovered was fascinating, though a trauma warning: the details are brutal and explicitly described. That aside, the suspects and their stories were captivating and definitely kept my attention. The linked storyline of what happened when they fell under scrutiny themselves was riveting. This is a great book and definitely recommended.

BTW, if you are listening to the (excellent) audiobook, don’t stop listening when you hear those words, as there is an interview with the author at the end which is really worth listening to.
