From the former Governor of the Bank of Canada, a far-seeing guide to the powerful economic forces that will shape the decades ahead.
The economic ground is shifting beneath our feet. The world is becoming more volatile, and people are understandably worried about their financial futures. In this urgent and accessible guide to the crises and opportunities that lie ahead, economist and former Governor of the Bank of Canada Stephen Poloz maps out the powerful tectonic forces that are shaping our future, and the ideas that will allow us to master them.
These forces include an aging workforce, mounting debt, and rising income inequality. Technological advances, too, are adding to the pressure, putting people out of work, and climate change is forcing a transition to a lower-carbon economy. It is no surprise that people are feeling uncertain.
The implications of these tectonic tensions will cascade throughout every dimension of our lives—the job market, the housing market, the investment climate, as well as government and central bank policy, and the role of the corporation within society. The pandemic has added momentum to many of them.
Poloz skillfully argues that past crises, from the Victorian Depression in the late 1800s to the more recent downturn in 2008, give a hint of what is in store for us in the decades ahead. Unlike the purely destructive power of earthquakes, the upheaval that is sure to come in the decades ahead will offer unexpected opportunities for renewal and growth.
Filled with takeaways for employers, investors, and policymakers, as well as families discussing jobs and mortgage renewals around the kitchen table, The Next Age of Uncertainty is an indispensable guide for those navigating the fault lines of the risky world ahead.

We live in a “post-truth” world, we’re told. But was there ever really a golden age of truth-telling? Or have people been lying, fibbing, and just plain bullsh*tting since the beginning of time? Tom Phillips, editor of a leading independent fact-checking organization, deals with this question every day. In Truth, he tells the story of how we humans have spent history lying to each other - and ourselves - about everything from business to politics to plain old geography.

Health and wellness campaigns preach avoidance of unhealthy foods, sedentary lifestyles, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, but rarely preach avoidance of unhealthy, difficult, or toxic people. Yet the health benefits of removing toxic people from your life may have far greater benefits to both physical and psychological health. We need to learn to be better gatekeepers for our minds, bodies, and souls. Narcissism, entitlement, and incivility have become the new world order, and we are all in trouble. They are not only normalized but also increasingly incentivized.

What is genius? The word evokes iconic figures like Einstein, Beethoven, Picasso, and Steve Jobs, whose cultural contributions have irreversibly shaped society. Yet Beethoven could not multiply. Picasso couldn’t pass a fourth grade math test. And Jobs left high school with a 2.65 GPA. The Hidden Habits of Genius explores the meaning of this contested term, and the unexpected motivations of those we have dubbed "genius" throughout history, from Charles Darwin and Marie Curie to Leonardo Da Vinci and Andy Warhol to Toni Morrison and Elon Musk.

During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to New York- and London-based bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush. Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years - a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business.

In Helgoland, he examines the enduring enigma of quantum theory. The quantum world Rovelli describes is as beautiful as it is unnerving. During the pandemic, government deficits skyrocketed to record highs while central banks primed the printing presses—and the time has come to pay for it. The ramifications of international COVID-19 spending could potentially last for decades, and inevitably one of the first consequences will be that central banks will lose control of interest rates, and subsequently, growth and inflation targets. The genie will be out of the bottle.

“Engaging and infused with humour, The Next Age of Uncertainty is a breakdown of economic chokepoints by a former Bank of Canada governor who isn’t afraid to let his personality shine. Great Book for Central Bank and Economics Nerds
The narrator delivers the script clearly, audibly, and at a great pace. Very on point for the subject matter. Not over stimulating, not too boring either.
The book itself offers great insight into our modern economy by a seasoned expert. A very insightful and real take on the economic future of Canadians.

Canada's economic story
The author does an excellent job of telling the story of Canada over a decade of ups and downs. The story explains many of the interactions between the political, fiscal, and financial forces guiding Canada's fortunes. If it has a weakness, it is that which is shared by most who write from a life of privilege having little understanding of the real middle class life in Canada.

Important read
Important read for everyone. Not just because it explains basic economic principles in layman’s terms, but how we need to understand the convergence of major forces shaping society to avoid the risk of retail politics and economic collapse. This book helps in the first step to dreaming up innovative solutions by shaping a change in mindset from that of past generations to open up an understanding of the possibilities the future may hold.

Surprisingly great!
banking sounds kind of boring, till you listen to this. The fiscal policy is not that complex but affects all of us.
poloz's language is simple and is more of a story than text book.
there is a kind of sincerity in the tone of the book, however we always have to trust but verify with our elected officials.
some suggested solutions for the future are inspiring. ie shared ownership of homes between banks and inhabitants. which would be interesting to see come to fruition. but would overturn a fixed hierarchy.
this is really worth a listen. hopefully we can all participate in our future more

An Obfuscated Work
The author’s style and the structure of the book make it difficult for the reader to apprehend his points. Brevity is not an attribute of this work. Much would have been gained by making it more succinct.
