À propos de cet audio

The story begins in Poland in 1921, set in a little-known period of history - the period between the World Wars. It's the story of Devorah and her sister, who escape the Night of the Burning in their village during the Jewish pogroms, and their incredible journey to safety, led by philanthropist Isaac Ochberg. Based on a true story, it's a powerful and utterly compelling first-person account of the trauma experienced by a child and her subsequent journey from despair through to hope.

Couldn’t stop listening

This historical novel is based on a true story involving the author’s mother-in-law who had been orphaned in Poland/Russia in the 1920s, a time of pogroms for Jews as well as diseases and hunger. A wonderful kind man, known as Daddy Ochberg, took it upon himself with the help of the South African government and others to bring 200 of these orphans by boat to south Africa. My son had said at the age of 11 that it was the best book that he had ever read, and when I read it I could see why. It is just as holding for preadolescents and adolescents as it is for their parents. I could not stop listening, often with tears in my eyes. The author writes beautifully and describes complex emotional situations with impressive insights into the characters.
