À propos de cet audio
With uncommon humanity, candor, wit, and erudition, National Book Award-winner Andrew Solomon takes the listener on a journey of incomparable range and resonance into the most pervasive of family secrets.
The Noonday Demon examines depression in personal, cultural, and scientific terms. Drawing on his own struggles with the illness and interviews wit fellow sufferers, doctors and scientists, policymakers and politicians, drug designers and philosophers, Solomon reveals the subtle complexities and sheer agony of the disease. He confronts the challenge of defining the illness and describes the vast range of available medications, the efficacy of alternative treatments, and the impact the malady has had on various demographic populations around the world and throughout history. He also explores the thorny patch of moral and ethical questions posed by emerging biological explanations for mental illness.
The depth of human experience Solomon chronicles, the range of his intelligence, and his boundless curiosity and compassion will change the listener's view of the world.

A brilliant and utterly original thinker, Andrew Solomon's journey began from his experience of being the gay child of straight parents. He wondered how other families accommodate children who have a variety of differences: families of people who are deaf, who are dwarfs, who have Down syndrome, who have autism, who have schizophrenia, who have multiple severe disabilities, who are prodigies, who commit crimes, who are transgender.

While reading psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison's groundbreaking account of bipolar disorder, An Unquiet Mind, Sarah Wilson discovered an ancient Chinese proverb that would change her life: To conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful. Unpleasant, but enlightening
The topic is heavy and many histories in it are heavy. Indeed it is an unpleasant topic and the author is very direct in his talk. I felt it was helpful, tho, from a person who deals with depression and wonder about the topic constantly. Is also good not feeling so lonely in front of our challenges. Triggering, but good overall.

A must listen to if you suffer depression
A very interesting and engaging audio book, and a must listen to if you suffer from, or are even remotely interested in mental disorders of any kind. Thank you Andrew Solomon for this. I will refer back to this when the dark clouds come back over my mind.

A humbling experience
Andrew Solomon tackles on a challenging topic with nuance, empathy and insight. While he has a personal stake in the discussion of depression and leverages his own experience fighting it, he nonetheless does not make the book about himself. I highly recommend this book to anyone either debilitated by the 'Noonday Demon' or attempting to gain understanding in order to help a suffering friend or a family member.

A masterpiece!!!
As someone who has suffered from depression for many, many years, this book was a game changer for me - both in terms of learning more about the disease and in terms of listening to someone who so vividly and accurately describes what depression feels like. It was the first time in my life that I heard, in words, what it is to feel depression. I care not that the audible version is condensed One of my issues when depressed is concentration - I’d rather have access to this information in a condensed form than not have any information at all. Given this book was published almost 20 years ago, I can’t help but wonder what, if anything has changed. I would love for Mr. Solomon to write a follow up.

comprehensive and compelling!
WOW. Truly this is an atlas that aids us in navigating our way through the complexi and vast nature of an all too common human condition. I was surprised at the end to find out that this audio version is abridged because the presentation covers it all. Some may find the voice of the reader unique at first but soon the voice perfectly serves to communicate what we all need to take in. Full disclosure: I have personally experienced depression and anxiety for the last 14 years of my life. This resource helped orient me beyond my knowledge and experience. I will refer others to this book so that they, like I can learn more deeply and relate to others more empathically.
