Now with a new afterword, Garrett M. Graff’s instant New York Times best seller The Only Plane in the Sky, the comprehensive oral history of September 11, 2001 called “history as its most immediate and moving” (Jon Meacham) and “remarkable...a priceless civic gift” (The Wall Street Journal).

Hailed as “remarkable...incredibly evocative and compelling” (The Washington Post) and “oral history at its finest” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), Garrett M. Graff’s The Only Plane in the Sky is the most vivid and human portrait of the September 11 attacks yet, comprised of never-before-published transcripts, recently declassified documents, and original interviews and stories from nearly 500 government officials, first responders, witnesses, survivors, friends, and family members. Here is a vivid, profound, and searing portrait of humanity on a day that changed the course of history and all of our lives.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 is a book exquisitely suited to audio format, a detailed cataloging of hundreds of personal stories, read by actors and culled from 5,000 oral histories conducted and archived around the country.... We hear from first responders, office workers in the twin towers, people traumatized by witnessing falling bodies.... Unlike many works of history, The Only Plane in the Sky, a mountain of indelible anecdotes, does not feel like a novel. It feels, instead, like dozens that ought to be written." (The New York Times Book Review)

One of a Kind

I deeply enjoyed reading this book in print, formidable historical testament to a turning point that it is, and I was really curious to see how it was rendered into audiobook form given its nature as an oral history. It did not disappoint. While anyone who has listened to real survivor accounts from 9/11 (such as in the 2021 Netflix documentary which Mr. Graff participated in the making of) will be able to tell that these are actor-read (save for Andy Card, Mark Tillman and a couple select well-known voices as themselves), they are still well-done by the large cast with respect and poignancy, only one or two readings here and there coming off slightly flat. There are some interesting choices made around certain items such as recordings of phone calls made from the planes - some which are transcribed word-for-word in the book and are quite arresting that way, fall flatter when the audiobook chooses to have the narrator summarize the content of the message instead, rather than read it exactly. I assume this was a choice made out of respect for the families, rather than having their lost loved ones' voices and last moments playacted by somebody. But since those last calls, last words, are some of the most striking material in the original text, something is a little lost in the impact of those passages with the way they are handled in the audiobook. But that is truly the only thing even remotely close to a complaint I could possibly summon. It's fully worth the listen anyway.

Every Person Should Read This

This is singularly one of the most incredible, compelling and heartbreaking books I have every encountered. The audio is PHENOMENALLY done with a huge cast that make you feel all the closer to the story and the people who lived so close to this tragedy.

Very good

Best of all the 9-11 accounts I have listened to. I appreciated the way the book was sequenced chronologically, including perspectives from across spectrums of survivors, family members, official government activities, journalists and so on. The pace was thankfully no breathless, just steady. Keep listening after the Epilogue for an insightful interview with the author.

Incredible!

This was a very detailed narrative told from the point of view of many people, each one played by a voice actor. generation, the performance, everything was absolutely 5 out of five. I highly recommend this if you are interested in the human side of 9/11.

Moving

This was the best audiobook I’ve listened to in years. The use of multiple voice actors to read the personal accounts was very effective.

Excellent

This book was absolutely amazing to listen to. The chronological order of the events and the organization of the storyline is perfect to learn from. Should be mandatory listening for anyone who wants to hear the impact that these actions had on others.
