Deeply Flawed - DNF
A Royal Mail letter carrier who reads all his employers' customers' mail, chats about its contents in detail on the doorstep with them, withholds mailed items he is entrusted to deliver until the customer lets him view their contents, and literally follows people into their homes to harass them into showing him what they have been sent. I know Canada Post is not the same as Royal Mail, but it can't be all that different either. Such invasion of privacy by one of their employees entrusted with delivering mail safely and without interference, rural or urban, would be a sackable offence. Further, an exploding letter bomb that kills a Royal Mail carrier would warrant nationwide media attention. It would involve various levels of police, and at least one inquiry. The union would get immediately involved and the whole thing would be an unholy mess. There's no way a tiny group of self-appointed "detectives" would be given any kind of access to investigators' work. This is what occurs in the first few chapters of this novel and these events spearhead the following mystery. There is scant police attention to the crime, and bizarrely, neither the postal union nor the national media show up. A mystery fiction should at least try to be believable in the big things to allow the reader to trust the author. I could not get beyond the falseness of the premise. I enjoyed the first book in this series but this one is a disaster, and I won't be buying another. DNF.
